HARRISON, N.J. – The New England Revolution snapped a club-record 394-minute scoreless streak in the early stages but it wasn’t enough to overcome the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night as the Revs suffered a 4-1 loss at Red Bull Arena.

A hectic opening period saw the teams combine for three goals inside the first eight minutes, as the Red Bulls got strikes from Dax McCarty and Fabian Espindola sandwiched around a Brandon Barklage own goal. The Revs pressed for an equalizer throughout the second half but were ultimately twice hit on the counter as Thierry Henry and Jonny Steele scored late goals to put the result beyond doubt.

The Revs (1-3-2, 5 pts.) remain winless since their season opener, while the Red Bulls (3-4-2, 11 pts.) have now won two of their past three.

There were two changes to the Revolution side which played to a 0-0 draw with Seattle Sounders FC last weekend. Diego Fagundez entered to partner Jerry Bengtson up top, while central midfielder Andy Dorman made his first start since returning to the Revolution this past offseason.

After an emotional pregame ceremony which included several tributes to the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy, both sides came out attacking and proceeded to combine for three quick-fire goals.

New York got the scoring started in the fourth minute when Tim Cahill laid off a short pass to McCarty, who took one touch to settle before lashing a low, left-footed shot inside the right post from 20 yards.

The Revs responded with an immediate equalizer just two minutes later when Barklage directed the ball into his own net after Lee Nguyen’s in-swinging free kick created the danger. The goal snapped the Revolution’s lengthy scoreless streak, which dated back to the season opener in Chicago.

Espindola provided the Red Bulls’ own response in the eighth minute, however, restoring the home side’s advantage at 2-1. Barklage’s searching ball out of the back sent Espindola streaking into the box, where he cut back onto his left foot and finished past goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

The scoring slowed as the half progressed, but the hectic pace did not as the Revs pressed at every opportunity. Dorman’s low pass skittered across the face of goal in the 19th minute, while Bengtson had the ball redirect off his thigh from Chris Tierney’s cross in the 27th minute. Four minutes later, Bengtson was put through on goal by Kelyn Rowe, but was pushed too wide as he tried to round Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles.

Not to be outdone, the Red Bulls had two more chances of their own before halftime. Cahill’s header from Henry’s free kick narrowly missed in the 39th minute, while Barklage’s powerful header from an Henry corner kick forced a strong save from Shuttleworth in the 44th minute.

Set pieces continued to be a threat for both sides and the Revs almost capitalized in the 62nd minute when a corner kick fell to Jose Goncalves, but Robles was on hand to make a big save on the close-range effort.

The Revs brought on Saer Sene and Juan Toja for the final half hour to bolster their attacking efforts, but eventually the Red Bulls took advantage by hitting on the counter.

Henry made it 3-1 in the 82nd minute when he ran onto Steele’s through ball and calmly finished inside the far post, while Steele got on the score sheet himself in the 89th minute, providing the finishing touch on a well-worked move which had Andre Akpan and Eric Alexander combine down the right side.

The Revs return to Gillette Stadium for their first home game in almost a month next weekend, when they’ll host the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, April 27.
