Youth Update: December 6

Youth update

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution Under-18 and Under-16 teams recently returned from the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s Winter Showcase. Combined, the teams went 5-1-0 – the Revolution’s best tournament performance in its five-year history – against Crew Soccer Academy (Ohio), Chivas USA (Calif.) and PA Classics (Pa.).

“It was a good weekend for the club. I thought that both teams gave a great account of themselves and put together some very good stretches of soccer against three very good teams,” said Director of Youth Development Bryan Scales.

“Our results were certainly favorable, but ultimately I felt that the quality of the soccer, the mentality of the players and the chemistry within the two teams was excellent. The guys worked very hard. We’ll look forward to the break over the holidays and then get back together in January to start preparing for the second phase of the season.”

Under-18s Winter Showcase summary

The Under-18s wrapped up their three-game schedule with an unblemished 3-0-0 record. The team earned a pair of 2-1 victories against the Columbus Crew (Nov. 30) and Chivas USA (Dec. 1), before posting a 1-0 win against PA Classics (Dec. 3) in their final match. Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) scored one goal – a game-winner – and recorded three assists during the Showcase. Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) also proved to be a key contributor, scoring one goal and adding one assist.

Under-16s Winter Showcase summary

The Under-16s earned a 2-1-0 record during the Winter Showcase, suffering a 1-0 loss to the Columbus Crew (Dec. 1), before downing Chivas USA, 4-2 (Dec. 2) and PA Classics, 2-1 (Dec. 4). Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) scored two goals during the event, while four different players had one goal/one assist performances: Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.), Zach Herivaux (Brookline, Mass.), Amadu Kunateh (Salem, Mass.) and Wes Turner (Newton, Mass.). Four Under-14 players were selected to join the travel squad: Max Diamond (Hopedale, Mass.), Aaron James (Amherst, Mass.), Matt Ranieri (Natick, Mass.) and Justin Rennicks (S. Hamilton, Mass.).

Academy Select game selections

U16 Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) and U18 Christian Sady (North Andover, Mass.) represented the Revolution in their respective Academy Select games on Saturday, Dec. 1. The games featured some of the top players throughout the 80-team U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Sady entered the game in the 46th minute for the U17/18 Blue team, which suffered a 1-0 loss to the Red team. Aviza started and played 40 minutes in goal for the U15/16 Red team, keeping a clean sheet during the first half en route to a 4-1 victory.

Season to-date records

Entering their winter hiatus, the Under-18s are 8-2-0 (24 pts.) overall and rank second in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference based on points per game. The Under-16s hold a 4-2-4 record (16 pts.) and are currently in fourth place in the Division. The Under-14s enter the break at 4-2-0 (12 pts.), which is good for sixth in U.S. Club Soccer’s Northeast Pre-Academy League.

Spring schedule

All three of the Revolution’s youth teams will resume play on Saturday, March 2, at Gillette Stadium. The U18s and U16s will take on FC Westchester, while the U14s are scheduled to play Oakwood SC. Regular training will begin the week of January 14, 2013.
