FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Goalkeeper Matt Reis made seven saves to record his fifth shutout of the season and help the New England Revolution secure a 0-0 draw with the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.

Reis made a pair of key stops on Antoine Hoppenot either side of halftime and denied Brian Carroll’s point-blank effort in the 51st minute as the Revs – featuring a new-look backline including Darrius Barnes and Flo Lechner – kept a clean sheet after conceding a combined seven goals in their past two matches.

Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath was forced into just three saves – all in the second half – as the Revs (6-14-7, 25 pts.) saw their winless run reach 10 games (0-7-3) to establish a new club record. Philadelphia (7-13-5, 26 pts.), meanwhile, is now winless in six (0-3-3).

The Revs were without leading scorer Saer Sene, who suffered a torn left ACL in the midweek draw with Chivas USA and will miss the remainder of the season. Sene’s absence was one of five changes to the Revolution’s lineup as head coach Jay Heaps elected to shake things up as the Revs played their third game in eight days.

Both sides struggled to find their rhythm throughout a quiet first half, but Philadelphia threatened twice just before the halftime break. In the 43rd minute, Hoppenot raced into the left side of the box and unleashed a shot which took a slight deflection off Barnes, but Reis held his near post and made a fine save. Reis had the woodwork to thank on the ensuing corner kick when Amobi Okugo’s header struck the crossbar.

The Union continued to threaten after the interval and had a glorious chance to strike less than 20 seconds into the second half. Freddy Adu sent Hoppenot on a clean breakaway, but Reis came up with a huge kick save to deny the rookie forward. Reis then did himself one better in the 51st minute, stopping Carroll’s point-blank shot after the ball found the Philly midfielder eight yards from goal.

Center back Stephen McCarthy registered the Revolution’s first shot in the 61st minute, directing a header wide of the target. It was the first of nine shots the Revs unleashed in the final 30 minutes, the most notable of which were Kelyn Rowe’s tight-angle drive which forced MacMath into a quality save in the 85th minute and Dimitry Imbongo’s stoppage-time blast which flew over the crossbar..

New England’s three-game home-stand comes to a close on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when the Revs will host the Columbus Crew. Kickoff from Gillette Stadium is set for 8 p.m.
