FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Saer Sène and Fernando Cardenas scored first-half goals and goalkeeper Matt Reis made six saves to earn his 100th career regular-season victory as the New England Revolution claimed a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium.

Midfielder Jaime Castrillon gave the Rapids (4-5-0, 12 pts.) the lead with a 21st-minute header, but Sène leveled the score in the 27th minute with his team-leading third goal of the season and Cardenas registered the eventual game winner in the 39th minute. With the win, the Revs (3-5-0, 9 pts.) snapped a three-game losing streak and earned their first win over the Rapids since 2007.

It was the first time the Revolution won a match after conceding the first goal in 49 tries and the victory made Reis the sixth goalkeeper in MLS history to reach the century mark in wins.

In the midst of playing three games in eight days, Revolution head coach Jay Heaps opted to make two changes to the lineup which suffered a 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls last weekend at Red Bull Arena. The backline and forwards remained unchanged but there was a pair of changes in midfield, where Benny Feilhaber and Cardenas took over on the wings for Lee Nguyen and Kelyn Rowe.

Feilhaber almost made an instant impact when the ball fell to him near the penalty spot in the second minute, but his low drive was blocked by a Rapids defender and cleared to safety. Colorado forward Omar Cummings got his shot through to Reis as he burst into the box in the 12th minute, but the Revs ‘keeper made the initial save and gobbled up the rebound after a brief spill.

Reis was unable to prevent Castrillon from grabbing his second goal of the season in the 21st minute, however, as the Rapids took a 1-0 lead. Martin Rivero delivered a curling corner kick to the near post, where Castrillon rose uncontested and angled the ball past Reis, who had started to come off his line.

It took the Revs just six minutes to equalize as Sène put the finishing touch on a well-worked move in the 27th minute. Clyde Simms’ deep service to the back post was met by Stephen McCarthy, who rose above his marker and popped the ball into the air. The ball fell for Sène, who ripped a vicious side volley past Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens from eight yards out.

Sène turned provider in the 39th minute, setting up Cardenas for his first MLS goal as the Revs took a 2-1 lead before the halftime break. Cardenas received the ball at the top of the box in the right channel, shook his marker and sent a curling, left-footed shot toward goal. Pickens got his fingertips on the effort but was unable to keep the ball from falling just under the crossbar.

Pickens had better luck in the 67th minute when he pushed away Sène’s toe-poke after the French striker cut inside from the left wing. Reis matched his counterpart in the 69th minute, tipping Castrillon’s header over the crossbar.

Colorado pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages – the visitors controlled 65.9 percent of the possession in the second half – but the Rapids managed just two shots on target in the final 45 minutes and never seriously threatened to pull even despite bringing on recent goal-scoring hero Kamani Hill in the 75th minute.

The Revs head back on the road to play their third game in eight days as they’ll visit Real Salt Lake on Saturday, May 5. Kickoff from Rio Tinto Stadium is set for 9 p.m. ET.
