Youth Teams South Africa

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution youth teams played their first home matches of 2012 this past weekend, meeting Players Development Academy at Durfee High School in Fall River, Mass., on Saturday, April 21, before taking on the New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, April 22.

Combined, the Revs' youth teams went 0-3-1, with the U18s earning one point on the weekend.

UNDER-18s

On Saturday, the Under-18s played Players Development Academy to a 2-2 draw. Following a PDA injury, New England capitalized on the restart for a 1-0 advantage. Nick Hoffman (East Brookfield, Mass.) received the ball and served in a cross for Ramiro Osorio (Hooksett, N.H.) to finish in the 31st minute. PDA equalized early in the second half, when Jelani Williams scored in the 47th minute. The Revs pulled ahead once more in the 74th minute, when Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) rose from the pack to head Osorio’s corner kick service home. PDA’s Tyler Lundgren leveled the score again in the 78th minute, and the teams came away with a point apiece.

The U18s then suffered a 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls on Sunday. Spurred by an attacking corner kick, the Revs scored first in the 11th minute. Taintor earned the assist, heading Osorio’s service across the face of goal for Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) to finish from close range. The Red Bulls answered with a pair of goals – from Brandon Allen in the 22nd minute and Daniel Bedoya in the 63rd – to level the score and take the lead, handing the Revs their fifth loss of the season.

UNDER-16s

On Saturday, the Under-16s were shut out by Players Development Academy. In a high-scoring first half, the visitors found the back of the next in the sixth, 15th and 35th minutes. Combined with a series of early injuries, the reeling Revs were unable to gain a foothold in the match. Their best opportunity came in the 72nd minute, when Amadu Kunateh (Salem, Mass.) went up for a bicycle kick at the top of the box. Gabe Gissie (Worcester, Mass.) got a head on the service, but a scramble inside the six saw it just wide.

The U16s suffered a second loss on Sunday to the New York Red Bulls. Gissie scored first for New England in the 33rd minute – the result of an impressive individual effort. The forward dribbled up the center channel, his shot then beating the Red Bulls’ goalkeeper. New York responded four minutes later, with Adam Najem equalizing before the break. The Red Bulls scored four more times in the second half, including an Ismar Tandir hat trick, before New England answered. Defender Christian Sady (North Andover, Mass.) went for goal in the 75th minute, his deflected shot slotted home by Matt Nyeayea (Worcester, Mass.) to make the final score 5-2.

With the draw and loss, the Under-18s now hold a 6-5-1 record – good for third place in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference. With the pair of losses, the Under-16s now hold a 7-5-0 record and are in second place in the Division.

The youth teams are back on the road this weekend, traveling to Boyds, Md., to face Potomac on Saturday, April 28, before meeting Baltimore Bays Chelsea in Owings Mill, Md., on Sunday, April 29.
