WNTs of Brazil, Canada to meet at Gillette Stadium

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The Brazil Women’s National Team, featuring star striker Marta, will face the Canada Women’s National Team at Gillette Stadium in the first game of a doubleheader which also features the New England Revolution’s 2012 home opener against the Portland Timbers at 4 p.m.


Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., with the Revolution match following immediately afterward.

The March 24 international match features two of the world’s top seven women’s teams, according to FIFA’s latest rankings. Brazil is currently ranked fourth in the world, while Canada is ranked seventh.


The Brazil National Team features five-time world player of the year Marta, who has scored 80 goals in 71 international appearances. Canada’s squad is led by seven-time defending national player of the year, Christine Sinclair, who has scored 130 goals in 171 international competitions with the senior team.


The teams most recently met at the 2011 Pan-Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, in October 2011. After a group-stage draw between the squads, Canada won the gold medal behind a 4-3 penalty kick victory over Brazil in the championship.
