FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution has acquired French forward Saër Sène on a free transfer from Germany’s Bayern Munich, where the player has been a member of the team’s reserve squad since 2009. Sène will be formally added to the team’s roster upon receipt of his U.S. P-1 Visa and his International Transfer Certificate. Per league and club policies, further contract details will not be released.
“We had the chance to have Saër in camp with us in Arizona and see him interact with our players both on and off the field,” General Manager Michael Burns said. “We believe he’ll play a valuable role for us this season. He’s scored goals consistently with each of his previous clubs, and we believe he has the ability to continue to do so in MLS.”
Sène, 25, came to the Revolution from Bayern Munich, where he spent the last two-and-a-half years playing for the German power’s reserve team, Bayern Munich II, which competes in the lower levels of Germany’s professional system.
In 55 appearances with Bayern Munich II between 2009 and 2011, Sène scored 19 goals and added three assists, including an 11-goal, two-assist effort during the 2009-10 season. Sène missed most of the 2010-11 season because of injury, which limited him to two games, but he scored eight goals and added one assist in 16 matches in the first half of the 2011-12 season.
In addition to his play with the club’s reserve squad, he was called up to Bayern Munich’s senior team several times, including for the inaugural Audi Cup in 2009 against AC Milan and for preliminary matches in the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League.
Before Bayern Munich purchased him following the 2008-09 season, Sène played with SG Sonnenhof Großaspach, a regional professional soccer team based in Aspach. He made 52 appearances for SG Sonnenhof Großaspach, scoring 26 goals and adding three assists in two seasons. He began his playing career in 2005 with FC E’tampes, a local-level training club.
