FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis has re-signed with Major League Soccer to continue to play for the Revolution. Per club policy, further terms of the contract will not be released.
The four-time MLS All-Star has played more games in goal (215) – and started more games in goal (214) – than any other Revolution goalkeeper in club history. Reis holds almost every one of the Revs’ career goalkeeping records, including goals against average (1.33), wins (80), saves (868), shutouts (55) and saves percentage (.725).
At the league level, Reis is prominent on MLS goalkeeper career lists, ranked fifth in games played in goal (254), sixth in games started in goal (249) and minutes played in goal (22,511), tied for sixth in wins (97), sixth in saves (993) and tied for fifth in shutouts (64).
“Matt has been one of our leaders, on and off the field, since coming to New England, and we’re pleased he will remain with us,” General Manager Michael Burns said. “With him re-signing with us, we can continue to look toward his leadership and experience as we move into 2012.”
In 2011, Reis made 27 starts, posting five shutouts and a 1.59 goals against average. His 111 saves ranked second in MLS, but his 4.11 saves per game was the highest in the league and he was the only starting goalkeeper to record a mark higher than 4.00 saves per game.
Reis, who became the Revs’ starting goalkeeper midway through the 2004 season, was originally drafted by his hometown LA Galaxy in the third round (26th overall) in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He played five seasons in Los Angeles before being traded to New England on Jan. 17, 2003, in exchange for all-star Alex Pineda Chacon.
With nine years of service with the Revs, he is tied with current head coach Jay Heaps and midfielder Shalrie Joseph for longest tenure as a Revolution player in club history.
Reis is a former member of the U.S. National Team and earned two caps, going 2-0-0 with one shutout. He made his first international appearance for the USMNT on Jan. 22, 2006, and posted a shutout in the team’s 1-0 victory over Canada. He made his second appearance in the team’s 3-1 victory over Denmark on Jan. 20, 2007. Reis was also an alternate to the U.S.’s 2006 FIFA World Cup Squad
