FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Columbus forward Tommy Heinemann recorded a hat trick to help lead the Crew Reserves to a 5-1 win over the New England Revolution Reserves on Sunday morning at Gillette Stadium. Andrew Sousa scored the Revs’ lone goal of the match.
The Revs opened the scoring the 26th minute when Kheli Dube’s advance toward goal was halted 25 yards out by a foul. Sousa stepped up to take the kick, and found a seam over the wall inside the near post for the 1-0 lead.
Just before the intermission, Columbus leveled to send the teams into halftime tied at 1-1. New England guest player Nicolas Dieuze fouled Bernardo Amor inches outside the penalty box, setting up an 18-yard free kick. Anor’s attempt whistled through the wall, but Tim Murray made a diving save to his left. Columbus jumped on the rebound, and Justin Meram’s resulting shot was blocked, but Heinemann collected the loose ball for his first goal of the morning.
After the teams came out of the half tied at 1-1, Heinemann struck again and gave the Crew a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute after drawing a penalty on a corner kick. He came across the box and found the ground, and then stepped up for the resulting PK and slotted it to Murray’s left as he went the other way.
Columbus drew another penalty in the 55th minute when Otto Loewy won a challenge just inside the area, but was whistled for a foul after the ball rolled over the end line. Kevin Burns stepped up and clanked his penalty off the left post and into the goal and a 3-1 lead.
Heinemann struck for his third and final time in the 71st minute, pick-pocketing Loewy outside the box and slotting home past Murray for Columbus’ fourth goal of the game.
Columbus wrapped up the scoring in the 79th minute when Meram collected a through ball from Santiago Primm and poked it home past Murray as he came back across the goal.
Kenny Mansally almost scored a second goal for the Revs in the 85th minute, sending a free kick to the far upper corner from 22 yards out, but Gruenebaum made a leaping save on the line to main the four-goal advantage.
With the win, Columbus improved to 8-1-0 (24 pts.) to move into sole possession for first place in the Eastern Division of the MLS Reserve League with one game remaining against D.C. United. That match is expected to be played in the off-season. Revolution Reserve concluded their season with a 4-5-1 (13 points) on the season.
