Duo named to U.S. U-17 roster

Declan McCabe

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution Under-16s Guyllain “Guy” Kabala (Manchester, N.H.) and Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass.) are among the 22 players named to the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team roster for the 2011 Albir Garden Sports Cup in L’Aflas Del Pi, Spain. The Revolution is one of only two clubs with multiple representatives on the roster.

The U.S. begins tournament play on Saturday, Oct. 15, when the squad takes on Mexico. Two days later, the U.S. faces United Arab Emirates, followed by Russia on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The team wraps up the event on Thursday, Oct. 20, against host Spain.

Both Kabala and McCabe are currently participating in U.S. Soccer’s Under-17 Residency Program during its fall semester in Bradenton, Fla. The program features 32 of the country’s top players in the age group, living on campus at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and training daily under the guidance of head coach Wilmer Cabrera. Currently at the beginning of a two-year cycle, the U17s will ultimately participate in the 2013 CONCACAF U17 Championship with the goal of qualifying for the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. The U.S. is the only nation to have qualified for all 14 previous FIFA U17 World Cups, most recently appearing in the Round of 16 during the 2011 event in Mexico.

Kabala is in his first year with the Revolution Under-16 team. The Manchester resident participated in two Under-15 Boys National Team training camps in 2011, the first in March and a second in July.

McCabe is entering his second year with the Revolution Under-16s, having made 23 appearances – including nine starts – while registering two assists en route to qualifying for the Development Academy Playoffs during the 2010-11 season. Previously, McCabe attended a U.S. Soccer Under-14 National Team camp in 2009 and Under-15 National Team camps in 2010 and 2011, held in Carson, Calif. The midfielder also participated in U.S. Club Soccer’s ID2 program in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and was selected for a trip to Germany and the Netherlands in 2010.
