FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New York Red Bulls scored a goal on either side of the break to shut out the New England Revolution, 2-0, in a reserve division match on Sunday morning at Gillette Stadium.

Immediately pushing for an early goal, the Red Bulls fired off two shots in the opening five minutes of play and continued to create chances throughout the remainder of the half. In the 32nd minute, New York earned a free kick at the edge of their attacking third. John Rooney sent the ball into the box, where captain Carlos Mendes got a head on it at the back post to give the visitors the lead.

Looking to equalize before halftime, the Revs saw two opportunities in the 40th minute. During the build-up, a Ryan Guy cross found Alan Koger in the box, but the first-year forward’s header was sent wide right.

The Red Bulls doubled their lead on the other side of the break, when the ball deflected off of a Revolution defender and was collected by Corey Hertzog inside the box. Finding himself in a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Tim Murray, the New York forward fired his shot into the back of the net.

Midfielders Andrew Sousa and Diego Fagundez contributed to an increasingly urgent Revolution build-up in the remaining 40 minutes of the match. The 16-year old pro saw the ball taken off his foot by the New York goalkeeper in the 55th minute, and nearly chipped it into the back of the net in the 75th. Unable to capitalize, however, the Revolution reserves suffered their second shutout loss of the season.

The two teams used a combined four players from their youth development programs. Dominik Machado started for the Revolution in his fifth appearance with the reserves, while Mitchell Taintor entered the game as a second-half substitute. New York’s Ethan Decker and Santiago Castano – who is rostered as a goalkeeper, but made an appearance as a field player out of necessity – both came in off the bench.

New England (3-3-1, 10 pts.) will travel to Philadelphia to play the Union in its next reserve division game on Monday, Aug. 29. New York (2-4-0, 6 pts.) will play D.C. United as their next MLS opponent on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
