Revs sign Milton Caraglio as first DP

Milton Caraglio

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution announced today that Argentine forward Milton Caraglio (pronounced car-RAHL-yee-oh) has signed with Major League Soccer and will play for the Revolution as its first-ever Designated Player. Caraglio will occupy one of the team’s eight international roster spots. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not released.

Caraglio is expected to join the Revolution for training on Thursday, August 4, and will be added to the team’s official roster upon the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate.

“We’re pleased that Milton is joining us as our first Designated Player,” Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said. “He is a talented player who has played against some of South America’s best competition, and we’re looking forward to getting him integrated into our squad as soon as possible.”

Caraglio, 22, joins the Revolution from Argentinean club Rosario Central, where he has played since 2007. He played four seasons in Argentina’s Primera Division, before Rosario Central was relegated for the 2010-11 season. In 49 appearances in the top division, Caraglio scored 11 goals. He missed much of the 2009-10 season while rehabilitating a ligament injury in his knee.

“He’s an exciting player,” Revolution head coach Steve Nicol said. “He has a good touch and likes to get forward. We’re looking for Milton to get involved in our goal-scoring, both with him scoring goals and helping get his teammates involved.”

Caraglio garnered interest from Europe, going on an extended trial at West Ham United, then of England’s Premier League, as well as interest from several Serie A teams in Italy. However, he remained with his hometown Rosario Central for the 2010-11 season while it played in Argentina’s second division.

The Revolution (4-9-9, 21 pts.) returns to action on Saturday, August 6, when the team hosts Chivas USA at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet and carried on the radio at 98.5 The Sports Hub.
