FRISCO, Texas – The New England Revolution Under-17 squad met the Colorado Rapids its second game of the 2011 Generation adidas U17 Cup on Tuesday night, playing to a 3-3 draw before earning an additional point in penalty kicks. As per tournament rules, group games tied at regulation are decided by penalty kicks, with the winning team receiving two points in the standings.

Tournament rules also dictate that each player must start a minimum of one group game and play in at least two during the week. As a result, the Revs – sporting a combination of navy jerseys and white shorts – trotted out a significantly different lineup from the previous night.

The teams kicked off in 100-degree heat and remained scoreless throughout the first half. On the other side of the break, the Revs tallied first in the 48th minute. Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.) delivered a free kick from the edge of the attacking third to the far post, where Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) rose above the pack to head it across the front of goal and into the back of the net.

Colorado equalized just before the water break in the 60th minute, but Eric Martel (Bedford, N.H.) – assisted by Fagundez – answered for New England in the 70th. The Rapids then made it 2-2 only minutes later, before scoring a third goal in the 76th.

In the final moments of the match, Fagundez leveled the score – assisted by Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) – to send the game into penalty kicks.

Still even after the first five shots, with each goalkeeper having made a save, the shootout continued into sudden death. Forest Sisk (Sudbury, Mass.) stepped up for the eighth penalty and converted for the Revolution. The Rapids’ next shot was sent high, handing New England a victory in its first-ever shootout.

The Under-17s (0-1-1, 2 pts.) are currently in third place in Group C, and play their third and final group game on Thursday, July 28, against first-place Chivas USA (2-0-0, 6 pts.) at 7:30 p.m. ET.
