FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution midfielder Benny Feilhaber is among the 23 players named by U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley to the United States’ roster for its match against Spain at Gillette Stadium on June 4, and the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the biennial regional championship for North and Central America and the Caribbean.
Feilhaber will join the U.S. National Team in training camp in Cary, N.C., on Sunday, May 29, and will miss at least two of the Revolution's MLS matches – at Dallas on June 4 and at New York on June 10 – and potentially up to five matches, including those against Toronto on June 15, against Chicago on June 18 and at Seattle on June 26, should the U.S. advance in the knock-out stages of the tournament.
The U.S. will meet top-ranked and defending FIFA World Cup champion Spain on Saturday, June 4, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, before it begins play in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which will be played June 5-25 in 13 cities across the country. The United States advanced to the finals of the 2009 Gold Cup, falling 5-0 to Mexico in the championship match. Prior to that, the U.S. was the two-time defending champion, having won the 2005 and 2007 titles.
The U.S. begins Group C play at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, June 7, against Canada at Ford Field in Detroit, before meeting Panama on Saturday, June 11, at 8 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
The U.S. will play its final Group C match against Guadeloupe at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan., at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday, June 14.
Feilhaber has made 38 appearances with the U.S. National Team and was a member of the U.S.’ 2010 FIFA World Cup squad and the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. He has scored two goals, including the game-winner in the final of the 2007 Gold Cup against Mexico in Chicago. Feilhaber made three appearances in South Africa during the 2010 World Cup, and three appearances at the 2008 Olympics. He is also a former member of the U.S. Under-20 squad.
Feilhaber was added to the Revolution roster through Major League Soccer’s Allocation Process on April 19. He has started all four of the Revs’ league matches since, playing every minute and adding one assist.
Bradley selected seven players from Major League Soccer for his 2011 Gold Cup roster, while the remaining 16 hail from overseas club teams.
The U.S. is 23-0-2 all-time in group play at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The U.S has won four Gold Cup titles - 1991, 2002, 2005 and 2007 - and has also finished second three times and third twice. Overall, the U.S. has a 38-5-6 record in 10 Gold Cup tournaments.
