Diego Fagundez vs. D.C. United

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution Under-18s and Under-16s went a combined 4-0-0 last weekend and both teams moved up in the Northeast Division standings in the U.S. Soccer Development League. Each team played two matches, taking on South Central Premier in Hopkinton, Mass., on Saturday, May 14, before returning to Gillette Stadium to meet Oakwood Soccer Club on Sunday, May 15.

UNDER-18s
The Under-18s earned a 4-1 victory against South Central Premier on Saturday in the first of the teams’ two meetings during the 2010-11 season. Cole Denormandie (Lincoln, Mass.) scored his seventh goal of the season in the 21st minute, assisted by Cameron Bielski (Dover, Mass.). The Revs then doubled the lead right before halftime, when Fabio Machado, Jr. (Leominster, Mass.) finished a cross from defender Colin Sweeney (Southborough, Mass.) in the 45th minute. On the other side of the break, Denormandie earned an assist on Adrian Reifsnyder’s (Newton, Mass.) 50th minute strike. Machado beat three South Central players to find the back of the net again a minute later, extending New England’s lead further. South Central made it 4-1 in the 87th minute, and the score held through to the final whistle.

On Sunday, the U18s shut out Oakwood Soccer Club, 3-0. In the fifth minute of play, defender Matthew Keys (Norfolk, Mass.) cleared an Oakwood corner kick out to midfield, where Machado collected the ball against the run of play. Machado then found Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.), who was fouled 10 yards outside the box. Felipe Fagundes (Lowell, Mass.) converted the free kick in the eighth minute, sending the ball over the wall and into the upper 90. Fagundez also contributed to the build-up ahead of the Revs second goal, finding Michael Rincon (Malden, Mass.) on the left flank. Rincon then made a neat pass into the box, where Denormandie slotted it past the goalkeeper in the 51st minute. Denormandie scored his third goal of the weekend – assisted this time by Fagundez – in the 61st minute to make it 3-0.

UNDER-16s
The Under-16s defeated South Central Premier, 2-0, on Saturday. Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) put the Revs on the score sheet in the 18th minute, finishing a cross from midfielder Jack Hilger (Hopkinton, Mass.). Diego Fagundez then scored his 14th goal of the season in the 22nd minute, assisted by Devin Devoy (North Attleborough, Mass.). Goalkeeper David Hepp (Natick, Mass.) made three saves throughout the match to earn his fourth shutout of the season.

The U16s secured the fourth youth win of the weekend in a dramatic fashion, downing Oakwood Soccer Club, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon. Forest Sisk (Sudbury, Mass.) – assisted by Devoy – gave the Revs the lead in the 16th minute. Oakwood leveled the score in the 50th minute when Hepp dove to his left to parry the initial shot away, only to have the follow-up driven into the back of the net. The game entered stoppage time still tied at 1-1, until the Revs were awarded a penalty kick in the first minute of stoppage time. Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) stepped up to take it and converted, giving the U16s their third consecutive win.

With the pair of wins, the Revolution Under-18 team – now 8-9-4 – has moved up to third place in the Northeast Division. The Under-16s now hold a 9-6-6 record after the weekend’s victories, and are in second place in the division. Both teams are local next weekend, when they will play first place Empire United on Saturday, May 21, and fellow playoff contenders Seacoast United on Sunday, May 22. Both days’ matches will be played at Durfee High School in Fall River, Mass.
