FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – On one of the “greenest” weekends of the year, the New England Revolution will inch closer toward achieving its Greener Goals when it hosts Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, April 23. In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, the Revolution will help raise environmental awareness with a series of activities at Saturday’s game.
On a resource conservation side, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s MassRIDES division will be on site promoting the NuRide rewards program, which has recently been launched in Massachusetts.
Through NuRide, Revolution fans can learn how reducing "drive alone" car rides can help them save money and earn points that can be redeemed for rewards from local, regional, and national restaurants, retailers, and events. One of the rewards NuRide participants can earn after just one week of taking greener trips is a $10 discount on a Category 2 ticket to a Revolution match. Waste Management will be on site to collect used household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt), as well as old cell phones. Any Revolution fan who brings a used cell phone or batteries can register for a drawing for four tickets in the Fidelity Investments Clubhouse to a future Revolution match. Waste Management will give away a selection of items to Revs fans who visit their booth on the Patriot Place Plaza before the game.
MLS W.O.R.K.S., the charitable arm of Major League Soccer, will also distribute 5,000 eco-tip guides, as well as 1,000 packets of seeds to fans. Other “Greener Goals” messages, including public service announcements, will be shown to further raise awareness of the cause.
Additionally, MLS W.O.R.K.S. purchased Renewable Energy Certificates – from 100 percent wind resources – from Portland, Ore.-based Bonneville Environmental Foundation to offset 100 percent of the electricity used at Gillette Stadium during Saturday’s game. The carbon dioxide reduction value is the equivalent to more than 177,800 pounds, and will support enough wind energy to power an average U.S. home for more than 11 years.
