Revolution U16 M/F Diego Fagundez

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Following a three-month break from play in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, the New England Revolution Under-16 and Under-18 teams returned to Gillette Stadium on Saturday, March 5, and Sunday March 6, for their first matches of the 2011 calendar year.

The U18s experienced a frustrating weekend, losing 1-0 to NJSA 04 on Saturday, and dropping a 4-3 decision to Match Fit Chelsea on Sunday. In their first match, the Revs – led by forward Cole Denormandie (Lincoln, Mass.) – outshot their opponents 12-2, but were ultimately unable to find the back of the net. A second half goal by NJSA 04 gave the visitors their first win of the season.

By Sunday, the Revolution Under-18s put an end to their scoring woes, making the score sheet three times in the loss to Match Fit Chelsea. Midfielder Cameron Bielski (Dover, Mass.) registered his first-ever goal for the Revs before Michael Rincon (Malden, Mass.) doubled the lead, sending the team into halftime with a substantial advantage. Match Fit Chelsea responded with a 50th minute goal before Rincon scored again – assisted by Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.) in his under-18 debut – only one minute later. The 3-1 lead did not last, as Match Fit Chelsea found the net three more times – twice in the final four minutes of the game, for the away victory.

The Revolution Under-16s kicked off the 2011 leg of their season with two wins, defeating NJSA 04 3-2 on Saturday before earning a 3-1 victory over Match Fit Chelsea on Sunday. Fagundez scored his ninth goal of the season in the 43rd minute of play, dribbling around three NJSA players to give the Revs the lead. Within the next four minutes, Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) and Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) also registered goals. In a final stand, NJSA scored twice, but Machado’s 47th-minute tally had secured a Revolution win.

Despite fielding a younger team on Sunday, the Revolution U16s earned a convincing victory against Match Fit Chelsea. The visitors opened scoring just before halftime, sending the Revs into the break with a one-goal deficit. In the second half, Ngatcha answered three times between the 60th and 74th minutes, earning his first hat trick as a member of the Revolution.

With the two losses, the Revolution Under-18 team now holds a 3-4-0 record on the season. Two wins kept the Under-16s in first place in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s Eastern Conference with a 4-2-1 record. Both teams are home at Gillette Stadium again next weekend, where they will host the PA Classics on Saturday, March 12, and FC Delco on Sunday, March 13.
