FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution announced today that the team has signed Argentine central defender Franco Coria. Coria will occupy one of the team’s eight international roster spots and will join the team pending his approval for a U.S. P-1 Visa. Per MLS and club policies, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Coria, 22, has played for Argentina’s Club Chacarita Juniors BA since 2007. Playing primarily for the team’s reserve side during the last four seasons, Coria made 18 appearances for Chacarita’s first team during the span.
“Franco is a pure defender who has gotten some great experience in Argentina,” Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said. “He likes to pass the ball and has great composure. We’re looking forward to getting him acclimated to the team and involved in our system.”
Coria made eight appearances with one start during the 2008-09 season as Chacarita saw success in Argentina’s Nacional B, winning promotion to the Primera Division for the 2009-10 season, Coria started five games during the team’s one-year stay in the top division, taking the field as a substitute on three occasions.
The Revs are currently in Orlando for an 11-day training trip, and are scheduled to play three training matches – against the University of Central Florida on Feb. 17, the U.S. Under-17 National Team on Feb. 21 and FC Dallas on Feb. 23 – during their stay.
