Revs youth teams head to Winter Showcase

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – After opening their 2010-11 season the weekend before Thanksgiving, the New England Revolution’s youth development teams return to action at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase, to be held at the Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Friday, Dec. 3, through Tuesday, Dec. 7. All 78 U.S. Soccer Development Academy clubs will participate in a total of 242 games during the extended weekend.

Both the Revolution’s Under-16 and Under-18 teams will play three matches each against North Carolina Fusion (Greensboro, N.C.), Minnesota Thunder (Plymouth, Minn.) and Sporting Juniors (Kansas City, Mo.).

The Revs will open the weekend against North Carolina Fusion on Friday, Dec. 3, with the U-18s set to kick off at 12 p.m. ET and the U-16s to follow at 2:15 p.m. ET.

After taking a day off on Saturday, the teams will return to action against Minnesota Thunder on Sunday, Dec. 5, as the U-18s will play at 11 a.m. ET to be followed by the U-16s at 1:15 p.m. ET.

The Revolution will close the weekend against Sporting Juniors on Monday, Dec. 6, with both the U-16 and U-18 teams scheduled to kick off at 1:15 p.m. ET.

Final scores from the tournament will be available at ussoccer.org at the conclusion of each day’s matches.

This year’s Winter Showcase will be held in conjunction with the Nike International Friendlies. The six-game round robin tournament will feature the Under-17 Men’s National Teams from the U.S., Brazil, Korea Republic and Turkey.

The Under-18 squad enters the tournament with a 1-1-0 record, while the Under-16s came away with a 1-0-1 record. U16s star Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.) scored a combined five goals in the two matches, one week after signing with the Revs’ first team. U18 forward Cole Denormandie (Lincoln, Mass.) had the elder team’s lone goal on the weekend.

After the 2010 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase this weekend, the Revs’ youth squads will be out of action until resuming their 2011 schedule in early March.
