FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Marko Perovic was named 2010 New England Revolution Team MVP, as announced by the team in a pregame ceremony prior to tonight’s regular-season home finale against the Kansas City Wizards at Gillette Stadium. Kevin Alston was also honored with the Best Defender award, while Taylor Twellman was awarded the Revolution’s MLS W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Year honor.
The MVP award was determined by a fan vote, while the defensive award was voted on by the team’s beat media.
Perovic, 26, has scored a team-high six goals and added three assists in 23 MLS regular-season appearances before tonight’s game. After joining the team in early April, Perovi? has been a fixture in the lineup in either the midfield or as a withdrawn forward. Overall this year, Perovi? has started five additional matches – all in SuperLiga – adding two goals and one assist. Deadly on set pieces, the Pristina, Serbia, native has scored three free kick goals this season.
Alston, 22, has started all 22 MLS regular-season MLS games in which he’s appeared, adding one assist. A second-year right back out of Indiana, Alston was selected to the 2010 MLS All-Star team earlier this season. Additionally, the Silver Spring, Md., product, was called up to the U.S. National Team twice this season, however, he was unable to play in any matches because of injury. Alston also scored his first-career professional goal in the SuperLiga 2010 final against Monarcas Morelia on Sept. 4. This is Alston’s first Best Defender award.
Twellman, 30, has been unable to play all season while continuing to suffer on-going health concerns stemming from a 2008 hit to the head. However, while unable to assist the team on the field, Twellman has become one of the league’s most visible off-the-field representatives in the areas of children’s medicine and head and neck injuries in the last 18 months. And in no place has Twellman been more visible and active than in association with Children’s Hospital Boston through his numerous visits, his gameday Taylor’s Team program and his efforts to assist Children’s Hospital’s fundraising efforts for Generation Cures.
The Revolution Budweiser Golden Boot, presented annually to the team’s top goal scorer, was not presented and will be decided after the final game of the regular season next Thursday in Harrison, N.J., against the New York Red Bulls.
