Revolution Update - Sept 27, 2010

On Sunday, Sept. 26, the Revs conducted a full-team community service project at Children’s Hospital Boston’s Yawkey Family Inn in Brookline ... in conjunction with Major League Soccer’s charitable arm, MLS W.O.R.K.S., and inspired by the White House’s “United we serve” campaign, the Revs completed the installation of a year-round greenhouse outside the Inn - which the Revs and MLS W.O.R.K.S. donated - and finished plantings for both inside the greenhouse and outside landscaping ... following a fall theme, the team also oversaw fun fall activities, including pumpkin painting, cookie decorating and front-yard soccer action … the recently-opened Yawkey Family Inn is a housing unit for patient families relying on Children’s Hospital Boston for low- or no-cost housing while young family members receive treatment at the hospital … for a full wrap-up of the event, visit revolutionsoccer.net.


PLAYOFF STREAK SNAPPED

With the draw against Columbus on Saturday night and coupled with several other results around the league, the Revs were officially eliminated from playoff consideration for the first time since 2001 … the Revs saw their run of eight straight playoff appearances – the longest current run in the league – snapped after having appeared in the postseason in each season from 2002 on … the eight-year run was also Boston’s longest current playoff streak of the city’s five professional sports teams.


PHELAN STRIKES AGAIN

Pat Phelan recorded his second goal of the season – and second goal of his career – on Saturday night when he connected with Marko Perovic’s free kick in the second minute … before this season, the third-year midfielder had made 32 appearances without a goal … in fact, with two goals and one assist, Phelan has recorded his entire career’s scoring numbers in 2010.


PEROVIC CHANGES HIS STYLE

With assists in back-to-back games, Marko Perovic has changed his repertoire up … the Serb came to the Revs as a goal-scoring threat, but his play recently has shifted to set-up man … he picked up his first career MLS assist on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Dallas, when he sent Ilija Stolica in for the team’s second goal, and then his free kick on Saturday, Sept. 25, against Columbus, set up Pat Phelan’s second-minute goal.


RASH OF PENALTIES

Entering Week 26 of the MLS schedule, the Revolution had not had a penalty kick called in any of its games in 2010 … but in the span of two games during Week 26, the Revs saw four PKs whistled – three against them, and one for … at Dallas on Wednesday, the Revs were twice called for penalties … FCD’s David Ferreira had two attempts – his first he pushed wide right, and his second he converted … Saturday against Columbus, the Revs earned their first penalty kick of the season, which Shalrie Joseph converted … however, later in the match Joseph was whistled for handling the ball in the box, and Guillermo Barros Schelotto converted the Crew’s attempt.
