Postgame Quotes: Fire 2, Revolution 1

Chris Tierney vs. Chicago Fire

Carlos de los Cobos, Chicago Fire Head Coach
On the result:
“Winning the game was very difficult for us, they were a very good team.  But we were able to execute and win the game.   I say this because in the past we had been up in the score and were not able to maintain the result.  The team has been training very hard and improving day-by-day with the arrival of Freddie Ljungberg, Nery Castillo and Gonzalo Segares.  I think we have a good future for the Chicago Fire.”
On Calen Carr’s game winning goal:
“I’m happy for Calen because he’s a player that’s suffered a lot this season.  He’s had injuries that have kept him from the field for a long time.   We’re happy for him and we’re happy that his professionalism has shown us something right away.”
On the importance of getting three points tonight:
“It was very important.  It’s always important to win games against teams from our conference and it is something we can build momentum from.  It’s not easy to score against the Revolution; therefore beating a team that is solid gives us confidence and helps build momentum.”
On Freddie Ljungberg’s performance:
“To be honest with you I knew him before he came here, and now I have the privilege of having him on the team.  I’m very happy because he has the capacity to help the team out professionally.”
Baggio Husidic, Chicago Fire Midfielder
On finishing more goals as of late:
“At training we’ve been a lot sharper.  Players are really adjusting to their positions and it’s over carrying on to the field in games.”
Freddie Ljungberg, Chicago Fire Midfielder
On the win tonight:
“It got a little bit chippy at the end, but that’s how it is.  For us it was important to get the win, even if it wasn’t New England whomever it was, it was important.  I think we deserved the win, we’re the ones that really tried to play.  I thought at times in the first half we played absolutely amazing.”
Calen Carr, Chicago Fire Forward
On his game winning goal:
“I’ve been on the sidelines watching for so long and to get out there and be a part of the team again was great.  But to score the game winning goal was extra special.  Hopefully this will give us a boost going into the next stretch of games.”
On his return:
“It’s been a tough road where you feel better, then worse, then better and I finally broke through the barrier.  I’ve been training for a couple weeks now and feel great and I’m healthy.  I give a lot of credit to the staff for helping through that.  I thought everyone played great tonight and to be part of the win was special.”
Chicago Fire Defender Gonzalo Segares
On his performance:
“I think I made several sprints up the field, but it’s going to help me quickly get back into shape. I kept myself in shape, but it’s never the same being the on the field and playing a game. I feel great. The team played very well and we had a good game. We moved the ball around very well and created chances. We have to keep pushing – the morale is high especially these past couple of games. We’re going to keep working hard and get better day by day. “
On the physical nature of the game:
“Games against New England are always physical. They were trying to gain the midfield with their physicality, but we moved the ball around and made it hard for them to gain possession. In the first half we had a lot of control; we just need to become sharper in the box. This game is a big rivalry. Both teams were tied in points and needed the win. We could see at the end they were disappointed with the result, but this time it went for us and we’re happy to gain three points.”
On the game Saturday against Houston:
“We’ve got to get our legs back, it’s a quick turnaround. Houston is a great team and we’ve always had trouble against them. They’re a very physical team, especially at home. We have to go there and take away points. We’ve done well the past couple of games. The team feels good in the locker room; we’re really motivated.”
New England Revolution Head Coach Steve Nicol
On making three subs and Corey:
“He probably isn’t okay. He was feeling it half-time, and we knew he was having issues, so it wasn’t a surprise when he went down. We needed some fresh legs at the time, that’s why we brought them on. I think the fresh legs did bolster us a bit, but it wasn’t enough.”
New England Revolution Midfielder Pat Phelan
On the game:
“We’re going to be frustrated tonight as well as tomorrow. We’ll leave with a bitter taste in our mouths – we hate losing here and to this team. I think the game was an opportunity to pick up some points, but we just let it slip through our fingers. Our team deserved a draw at least and the penalty at the end. But as it’s said, ‘you make your own luck’ and we just didn’t do it.”
On moving on:
“We’ve got to pinpoint the mistakes, especially on the goals. The team has to try and tighten things up. I think we know we can play better than this, it’s just a matter of going out there and getting our heads right, our legs back under us. It’s a tough road trip. The good thing is we’ve got a game coming up quick, so we don’t have a lot of time to sit and whine about it.”
On the playoffs:
“We’re still right in there, six points or seven out of the last spot. It’s definitely possible; you just have to pick up points on the road in this league to be in the playoffs. We dug ourselves a big hole. It’s more important for us to pick up points. The game against Kansas City is a must win for us, like all of our games.”
New England Revolution Goalkeeper Matt Reis
On the game:
“We really can’t lick our wounds for too long. We’ve got another big game against Kansas City and it’s a small field along with a few new pieces to their team. The only thing we can do is take a look at the game and correct our mistakes.”
New England Revolution Defender Cory Gibbs
On the team’s performance:
“Overall, it was alright. It’s a hard loss to take, one of the hardest of the season when you los ein the last four minutes. We just have to move on from it and keep going. WE had a nice little run and now it stopped and reality is back in check. We just need to go and keep pushing.”
On his injury:
“I was dealing with a sprained ankle last game. I was just coming back from it, and felt it a bit. Luckily, it’s not too serious so I should be ready for Saturday.”
On the game with Kansas City:
“We have to bounce back from it; it was a hard way to lose. The team has to know what the goal is in hand and pull three points out and nothing less.”
