Revs Youth Update: May 4, 2010

DURFEE, Mass. & GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Coming off of a winning weekend at home, the New England Revolution youth teams went a combined 1-1-2 in their latest matches against Potomac-U at Durfee High School on Saturday, then  traveling to Adelphi University Sunday, May 2, to square off against Albertson SC. The U16’s played to a loss and a tie, while the U18’s pulled off a spectacular late goal to conserve a draw with Potomac-U, and carried momentum into Sunday where they defeated Albertson by the largest margin of victory yet this season.

The Under-16s kicked the weekend off with a home game at Durfee High School on Saturday afternoon in a 3-2 loss to Potomac-U. The U16s went down 2-0 in the first half on goals from Potomac-U’s Eduardo De La Riva in the 11th minute and Nick Breitsameter in the 25th. The youth Revs cut the lead to one when Pablo Espinola (Somerville, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal in the 40th minute, just before halftime. Cole Denormandie (Sudbury, Mass.) then tied the score just after the break, with an unassisted tally in the 45th minute. The two clubs played even for the next 15 minutes, but Potomac-U’s Andrew Kestler scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 60th minute, and the U16’s comeback bid fell short in a one-goal loss.

The Under-18’s salvaged a dramatic tie with a late goal against Potomac-U on Saturday afternoon. Jonni Ventura (Westminster, Mass.) ensured a draw in the 88th minute on a connection from Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) as time wound down. Potomac-U struck first when Joseph Pratt tallied in the 11th minute, but Fabio Junior (Leominster, Mass.) knotted the score at one in the waning minutes before halftime. Potomac recaptured the lead when Hugh Roberts found the back of the net in the 47th minute, but the youth Revs kept battling and finally converted a late goal to stay out of the loss column.

Thanks in part to stellar goaltending by Tyler Zon (Wellesley, Mass.), the U16’s played a scoreless first half against Alberson SC at Adelphi University on Sunday. It was Albertson that struck first, though, with a goal by Dakota Barnathan in the 73rd minute. Two minutes later, the U16’s were able to tie the score in the 75th minute with a goal by Cole Denormandie, assisted by Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.). Neither team could convert another tally, and the match finished and finished in a 1-1 tie.

The U18s followed with an exciting, high-scoring victory over Albertson SC to cap the weekend. Jonni Ventura set up Michael Rincon (Malden, Mass.) in the 39th minute, giving the U18’s a 1-0 lead. Albertson tied the game in the 43rd minute with a goal by Mosiah Bader. The U18’s dominated the second half, getting goals from Gustavo Santos (Framingham, Mass.) in the 67th minute, Jonni Ventura in the 72nd minute, Homero Morais in the 76th minute, Rincon again in the 79th minute, and Fabio Junior in the 82nd minute. The U18’s defeated Albertson SC by a final score of 6-1.

A loss and draw moved the U16s to 8-6-5 (5-2-0) on the season, still good for first place in the Northeast Division. A draw followed by a win improved the U18’s record to 9-8-2 (4-2-1) on the season, also good enough for first place in their division.  Both clubs are home at Gillette Stadium next weekend, where they will host PDA on Saturday, May 8, and New York Red Bulls on Sunday, May 9.
