NEW ENGLAND VS. NEW YORK RED BULLS U.S. OPEN CUP SERIES INFORMATION

• The 2010 season marks the 11th season in which the Revolution has competed in the U.S. Open Cup (1997, 2000, 2001, 2003-present)
• New England is 10-8-3 all time in U.S. Open Cup play … the Revs are an impressive 8-3-2 record in home games, but only 2-5-1 on the road … the U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament.
• The Revs’ opponent was finalized on Wednesday, April 27 when New York defeated the Philadelphia Union, 2-1, in the USOC play-in game ... May 12 will be the Revs’ first-ever game in the brand-new Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.
• New England and New York have met in Open Cup play once, in 2003, when the then Metrostars defeated the Revolution, 2-1 at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J.
• The Revs lost to the Harrisburg City Islanders last year in their only Open Cup game, a 2-1 overtime loss in the third round of play … the Revolution’s last win in Open Cup play came on July 8, 2008, when the Revs advanced past Crystal Palace Baltimore in penalty kicks in the quarterfinal round.
• Historically, New England has fared well in the U.S. Open Cup, winning the tournament in 2007, taking runner up in 2001 and losing in the semifinals in 2008.
• The Revs have a four-game win streak and a five-game win streak since they began participating in 1997 … the four-game win streak came in 2001 en route to the finals and the five-game win streak from 2007-2008 en route to the Open Cup championship and a third-round win the following year.
• New England’s longest losing streak spanned three games, from 2003-2005 … the losing streak started with a 2-1 loss to the Metrostars in 2003.
• Of the players available to play against New York on Wednesday, only two have found their names on the scoresheet in Open Cup matches … Kenny Mansally scored the team’s lone goal in its 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace Baltimore in 2008, while Chris Tierney has recorded a pair of assists in Open Cup play, both against the Richmond Kickers in 2008.

PLAYER NOTES VS. NEW YORK
Taylor Twellman is the Revolution’s all-time leading scorer against New York with 14 goals, while he’s also added five assists in 19 career appearances … he scored the 100th and 101st goals of his career in the Revs’ 4-0 win on June 7 … that appearance was Twellman’s last match before being added to the disabled list to close the 2009 season.
Sainey Nyassi scored the lone goal in the Revs’ 1-1 draw in the club’s last meeting with New York on Sept. 18, 2009 … that tally is one of his six career goals.
Preston Burpo picked up a win in his only career start against New York in 2008 when he played for Colorado … Burpo made four saves on eight shots faced in the win.
Matt Reis is 9-2-6 in his Revolution career against the Red Bulls, posting a 1.26 goals against average and six shutouts.

Sainey Nyassi scored his only goal of the season in the 13th minute to give the Revs a 1-0 lead they held onto until the 69th minute when John Wolyniec scored the tying goal with assists from Dane Richards and Macoumba Kandji. The Revs held on for the draw and extended its unbeaten streak against New York to an MLS record 13 games without losing to an opponent, dating back to 2006.

NEW ENGLAND VS. SAN JOSE SERIES INFORMATION

• Saturday marks the 33rd all-time meeting between two of the original MLS teams … San Jose leads the all-time, regular-season series between the two clubs, 17-11-4.
• Saturday’s match will conclude the regular-season series between the Revs and Earthquakes … San Jose goes for the 2010 sweep after a 2-0 win by the Earthquakes at San Jose on April 17 … San Jose is the first MLS club with who New England will conclude a 2010 regular-season series, playing just four weeks apart.
• The Revolution hasn’t fared very well when the Earthquakes visit Foxborough, going 6-9-1 in 16 all-time matches ... the Revs have had an even tougher time with the Earthquakes since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, with a 2-5-1 record and have been outscored, 12-5 inside the stadium … however, New England has won two straight over San Jose – the 2008 and 2009 meetings - in Foxborough, with a 4-1 scoring edge.
• The Revolution is 3-2-0 against San Jose since the team returned to the league in 2008 … but, the Revs enter Saturday’s game riding a one-game losing streak against the Earthquakes.
• In the 32 all-time meetings between the two clubs, San Jose has outscored New England, 61-42 … there have been 10 shutouts recorded in the series, with five posted by each club… New England has shut out San Jose once in each of the past two seasons, a 2-0 win in Foxborough on May 17, 2008 and a 1-0 win at San Jose on April 21, 2009 … the Earthquakes retaliated with a 2-0 shutout of their own on April 17.
• The Revolution and Earthquakes have never met outside the MLS regular season.

PLAYER NOTES VS. SAN JOSE

• Only two current Revs have scored goals against San Jose while playing for the Revolution: Taylor Twellman (three goals in 10 appearances) and Kheli Dube (two goals in three appearances) … Twellman is the only current Rev to score against San Jose for the Revolution during its first stint in the league.
• Kheli Dube is the only current Revolution player to score against the Earthquakes since the club re-entered the league in 2008, striking twice … Dube scored his first career goal in his first career start on May 17, 2008 in the Revs’ 2-0 win at Gillette (the other goal was an own goal) … the Zimbabwean then scored the only goal of the game in the Revolution’s season-opening, 1-0 win at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 21, 2009.
• Marko Perovic made his first-ever MLS start against the Earthquakes when the teams met on April 17 in Santa Clara.
• Preston Burpo has played against San Jose three times in his career, two starts while a member of the Colorado Rapids in 2009 and one earlier this season … also a one-time member of the Earthquakes, Burpo owns a 0-1-2 record with a 1.33 goals against average … Burpo’s first two starts against San Jose came within less than a week of each other last September (Sept. 18 and Sept. 23), and are only four weeks apart this year.
• Matt Reis is 3-3-2 in his Revolution career against San Jose with a 1.13 goals against average and two shutouts … all three of Reis’ wins and clean sheets have been recorded since the club re-entered the league in 2008.

The Revs and Earthquakes played a scoreless first half, but the Revs left the West Coast with nothing to show for their efforts, as San Jose tallied two goals in the second frame to claim a 2-0 victory. Chris Wondolowski and Ike Opara scored goals for the Earthquakes in the 57th and 72nd minutes to end the Revs brief two-game winning streak. Preston Burpo made four saves in the loss.

OPEN CUP QUEST BEGINS
On Wednesday, the Revs begin their quest for their second U.S. Open Cup championship and third tournament championship overall … this is the team’s 11th time competing in the event … the club has compiled a 10-8-3 overall mark in the tournament, winning in 2007, earning a runner-up finish in 2001 and advancing the 2008 semifinal round.

NO REST FOR THE WEARY & WINLESS
The Revs are still looking for their first win in one of the busiest months of the club’s history with a game at the New York Red Bulls in Wednesday night’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play-in round match … the club’s second straight midweek game of 2010 is followed by visit from the San Jose Earthquakes … New England is now 0-2-1 in May and 0-4-1 since its last win on April 10.

REVS RUN AGAINST RED BULLS IN OPEN CUP
The Revs will make their first appearance in the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. against the New York Red Bulls … New York defeated the Philadelphia Union, 2-1 at Red Bull Arena on April 27 for the right to host the Revolution this week … the Red Bulls will host the Revs because New York won a coin-flip to decide the sites in March … last year, the Revs lost their only USOC match, 2-1 at the hands of the Harrisburg City Islanders … New England and New York have met in Open Cup play once, in 2003, when the then Metrostars bettered the Revs, 2-1 to move on to the semifinals … Wednesday will mark the Revs first appearance at the brand new red Bull Arena … the winner will move on to host Colorado in late May or early June.

BOGGS MAKES THE MOST OF IT
Though the Revolution dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Columbus on a late goal, there were some positives to be taken out of the loss … one bright spot was that rookie Zak Boggs, who, in his first career start, netted two first-half goals to keep shorthanded Revs in the game until the waning moments … the rookie tandem of Zack Schilawski (four goals) and Boggs (two goals) have combined for 60 percent of the Revolution’s scoring offense in 2010, far and away the most prolific rookie tandem in MLS so far this season.

REVS GET BURNED LATE
The Revs entered Saturday’s stoppage time of the second half with the score tied and expecting to leave Ohio with at least a point … but when the Crew scored in the first minute of injury time, the feeling was all too familiar for the veterans on the club … it was the latest the Revolution surrendered a game-winning-goal since Aug. 9, 2008 when Toronto won on an 86th-minute goal … Saturday also marked the first time since a 4-2 loss to D.C. United on July 27, 2003 that the Revs have given up a game-winning-goal in stoppage time.

SHOOTING WITH THE WRONG FOOT
Team captain Cory Gibbs scored an own-goal for Columbus in the 35th minute of Saturday night’s 3-2 loss at Columbus … Gibbs’ own-goal gave the Crew a temporary lead and was the first scored by the Revs since Sept. 5, 2009 when former Rev Jay Heaps put the ball in his own net in a 4-2 loss to the Kansas City Wizards at Gillette Stadium.

SAN JOSE MAINTAINS AN EDGE
The San Jose Earthquakes hold a 61-42 all-time scoring advantage in 32 regular-season meetings, especially in the second half of games, where the Earthquakes are a +16 in goal differential … San Jose has historically tallied late in the second half of games against New England, with 30 of its 61 goals between minutes 61 and 90, including a score in the 72nd minute of the Revs’ 2-0 loss at San Jose last time the clubs met on April 17

IT’S A WRAP
Saturday’s match against San Jose will wrap up the first of 15 series this year, and will be the fastest to wrap in 2010 so far … the clubs first played on Saturday, April 17, in Santa Clara, Calif., and 28 days later will conclude the two-game series this Saturday … the Revolution’s only other series that will conclude as fast as the San Jose series is the Philadelphia two-game set … the teams will first meet on Saturday, July 31 at PPL Park, and then meet again on Saturday, August 28, at Gillette Stadium.

NEW ENGLAND LEADS THE EASTERN CONFERENCE…IN GAMES PLAYED
The Revs have played eight games thus far in 2010, the most of all Eastern Conference teams in Major League Soccer … four clubs from the Western Conference have also already played eight matches so far in 2010 … though it will not show in the standings, the Revolution plays its ninth overall match on Wednesday and will play its 11th of the year on May 19 when the Revs host SL Benfica … by the time the calendar flips to June, New England will have played 11 league games … 11 games ties for the most since the Revs played 13 games start of June in 2000 … the Revolution also played 11 games before June in 1997, 1998 and 2008.

DUBE CONTINUES TO DISH IT OUT
Kheli Dube notched his fourth assist of the season on Saturday night, which is tied for third in MLS … his four-assist total has come in just seven games, since Dube was suspended for the Chivas USA game on Wednesday, May 5 … after picking up his fourth assist of the season on Saturday at Columbus, Dube has already tied his 2008 season high (4), which is also his single-season best.

A FIRST FOR PHELAN
Pat Phelan’s assist on Zak Boggs’ goal in the 40th minute of Saturday night’s 3-2 loss at the Columbus Crew was the first of his three-year MLS career … Phelan picked up his first assist in his 40th game with the Revs … Phelan has now become a stalwart in the Revs’ 2010 starting lineup, starting seven of eight games this season, after starting five as a rookie in 2008, and 13 in 2009.

VERSA-TIERNEY
Third-year player Chris Tierney has developed into a utility player for Steve Nicol … the Wellesley, Mass., product has now played four different positions this season – his customary left midfield, left back (where he’s played the majority of his first two years with the Revs), right back and now central midfield … late in the Columbus game, he moved slightly ahead of his midfield partners and was playing a more attacking role, as well … Tierney, who has a youth player was a forward, played a midfielder in college at Virginia before moving to the back when he first joined New England.

SINOVIC AND SMITH MAKE THE SWITCH
Because of numerous injuries to the Revs’ roster, two players found themselves considerably out of their normal positions on Saturday at Columbus … Seth Sinovic, a left-footed rookie left back, was moved to the right back position, while Khano Smith, a left-footed midfielder/forward, was slotted as the team’s left back … Sinovic had started the team’s first seven matches at left back before moving across the field … Smith had previously seen time at left back while he was with Lincoln City in England this past winter.

REVS TONE IT DOWN
After receiving three red cards in two previous games and being among the league leaders in fouls committed this season, the Revolution was not carded once on Saturday night … the game marked the first time in the 2010 season – and first time since July 19, 2009 against Chivas USA – that the team went without a card being issued … though Columbus was shown two yellow cards, New England was whistled for a season-low four fouls and was not carded at all … Joseph Niouky, who is tied for the league lead with 20 fouls committed, played his first game of the season and of his career without being whistled for a foul.

MAY’S CRAZY EIGHTS
The eight scheduled games in the month of May includes six regular-season contests, the U.S. Open Cup game and one friendly against an international opponent (SL Benfica) … the games will be played in close proximity to home, however, as five of the eight games will be held at Gillette Stadium and the farthest the Revs had to travel was Columbus (May 8) … the Revs have played eight games in one calendar month only one other time in franchise history: August 2008.

NEW ENGLAND TO HOST INTERNATIONAL POWERS CRUZEIRO AND SL BENFICA
The Revs recently announced that the club will host two international friendlies, one this month and one in June … New England first plays legendary Portuguese club SL Benfica on Wednesday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m., followed by Brazilian powerhouse Cruzeiro Esporto Clube on Sunday, June 13, at 7 p.m. inside Gillette Stadium … Cruzeiro, which is acclaimed for its player development system, boasts a current roster that features such Brazilian stars as Gilberto, Roger, Kleber and Fábio … founded in 1904, Benfica boasts a record 33 league titles (including the 2009-10 title, which it captured this past weekend), 24 Portuguese Cup titles, and back-to-back Portuguese League Cups.

YOUTH UPDATE
The New England Revolution youth teams enjoyed another travel-free weekend with four games at Gillette Stadium, going 2-1-1 in games against PDA and the New York Red Bulls on Saturday and Sunday … the Under-16s played to a 1-1 draw with PDA, while the Under-18s won a 2-1 game on a late penalty kick over PDA at Gillette on Saturday … Sunday followed with a visit from the New York Red Bulls, as the U16s defeated the New York, 2-1 and the U18s dropped a tough 1-0 decision later Sunday afternoon … the first-place Revs youth teams now ready for another two-game weekend, with matches at Empire United on Friday Seacoast United on Saturday.
