FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – With the playoffs right around the corner, the New England Revolution youth teams picked up valuable points this weekend as they played host to PDA at Gillette Stadium on Saturday and the New York Red Bulls on Sunday. Despite the wind, rain, and thunderstorms, the U16s were able to play a strong game and earn a 1-1 tie, while the U18s played hard as well, defeating PDA 2-1, on Saturday. The youth Revs then earned a split with the New York Red Bulls at Gillette on Sunday. The U16s gutted out a 2-1 win and the U18s dropping a tough 1-0 decision.
The Under-16s started the second half down 1-0 after PDA’s Brandon Allen scored in the 35th minute of the first half. It was Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.) who tied the game when he was awarded a penalty kick in the 51st minute. Despite the wind and rain, the U16s were able to hold on to the tie score, thanks in part to strong goalkeeping by Ryan Simpson (North Andover, Mass.), who blocked a penalty kick in the final minute of play to ensure a final score of 1-1.
The Under-18s scored first in their match against PDA when Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) put a penalty kick past PDA’s goalkeeper in the 24th minute. Down by a goal at the start of the second half, PDA’s Jeffery Eisenbud scored in the 67th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The U18s secured their victory in the 87th minute when Miguel Castro (Lynn, Mass.) scored on the team’s second penalty kick of the afternoon.
The Revolution youth teams were at home again on Sunday, this time facing the New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium. The U16s scored twice against New York, defeating the Red Bulls by a final score of 2-1. The U18’s played a hard fought, physical game against the Red Bulls, but could not find the back of the net, losing 1-0 to New York.
Sal Castro (Lynn, Mass.) set up Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) in the 38th minute to give the U16s a 1-0 lead to end the half. New York was quick to tie the game in the 45th minute on a goal by Travis Wantchekon. The game remained tied until Forest Sisk (Sudbury, MA) netted the game winning goal in the 63rd minute.
Physical play was the focus of the U18 game, with a total of six yellow cards handed out (three for the Revs, three for New York) and two red cards, both for the U18 Revs. The first ejection came in the 13th minute when Michael Rincon (Malden, Mass.) was thrown out after retaliating against a play by a Red Bulls player. The second red card came when Miguel Castro (Lynn, Mass.) was ejected by officials in the 86th minute of play. Despite being reduced to 10 players for most of the game, the U18s played a strong game against New York, who was able to hold off the attacking Revs and keep the game tied at 0-0. The tie was broken in the 70th minute by New York’s David Najem, who scored on a shot from 30 yards out. Try as they might, the U18s could not find a way to score and were defeated 1-0.
Both the U16 and U18 teams remain in first place in the Northeast Division and take to the road next weekend, first facing off against division rivals Empire United on Saturday, and Seacoast United on Sunday.
