The Boston Red Sox confirmed on Friday they are pursuing the Old Firm derby to be played at Fenway Park on July 21.
“In partnership with the city of Boston, we are exploring the possibility of hosting an international football friendly at Fenway Park on July 21,” Red Sox VP of Public Affair Susan Goodenow told MLSsoccer.com. “The two teams we’re in conversations with are Celtic Football Club and Rangers Football Club.”
Goodenow said that Fenway Sports Group and the Boston Red Sox are the two entities working in conjunction to complete the deal.
Fenway Park has played host to soccer during its storied history, most notably serving as the home field for the Boston Beacons of the NASL during the 1968 season. Even Celtic has played there, when they lost an exhibition to the American Soccer League’s New York Yankees in 1931.
Goodenow did not offer details about how the field would be configured and whether grass would need to be installed.
The soccer attendance record for New England was set in Sept. 2007 for an exhibition match at Gillette Stadium between Brazil and Mexico, which drew over 67,000 fans.
The Revs officially announced on Friday that they are hosting Portuguese giants Benfica, and there have also been rumors of a friendly against Cruzeiro. The MLS club will be playing in Superliga this summer against Mexican and other MLS competition.
