Postgame Quotes: Galaxy 1, Revs 0

New England Revolution Head Coach Steve Nicol

On tonight’s game:
“One thing we said at halftime was that we needed to believe in what we were doing. I think the inexperience that we have manifested itself and in the first half we were timid, unsure. I think in the second half we came out for thirty minutes we had two fantastic chances which you are expected to score from. That changes the whole game. I think the last 10-12 minutes we were pushing, trying to push, taking chances and they broke in on us a couple of times. I think overall there were a lot of positives to take from the game we had two pretty good chances and we are disappointed we did not take one.”

Revolution Defender Seth Sinovic

On making his first start as a pro:
“Obviously we’re a little disappointed with the result, but in the second half we started to play a little more and we created a few more chances. Personally it was just exciting being out there.”

On any nerves and getting acclimated to the game:
“I got through it in warmups and once the game got going I knew what I had to do and knew that I couldn’t let any nerves get in my way.”

On facing Landon Donovan:
“It’s good to get the best in the first game and get it out of the way. It was good and it’s always good to go up against those types of players.”

Revolution Forward Zack Schilawski

On making his MLS debut:
“I think that looking back, it was fun. Obviously we’re a little disappointed in the result. It was frustrating at times, but I think that once we settled in, moved the ball around and had a little more possession it was good.”

On Steve Nicol’s halftime speech:
“He said that we needed to believe in ourselves a little bit, that’s pretty much what the message was at halftime. We just had to have the confidence to go out there and the courage to knock the ball around a bit.”

On the pairing with Kheli Dube:
“We created a few chances and sometimes that’s all you can ask for. Sometimes you’re a little unlucky not to finish, but you have to forget those and try to create as many chances as you could. We created a few chances and were unlucky not to get on the board.”

On facing the Galaxy’s two tall center backs:
“That was definitely a frustration for much of the game. Both (Kheli and I) wanted balls to our feet a little bit more, quicker combination play, stuff like that instead of just going over the top. To start the game off we wanted to keep it safe, keep it away from our backs and that was pretty much them game plan there. We weren’t trying to play into their hands with them being bigger than us, we wanted to keep them on their toes.”

Revolution Forward Zak Boggs

On making his MLS debut:
“For me personally it was about just getting my feet under me. This was my first official game so that was cool and it was a great atmosphere. Hats off to all those other rookies that made their debut. I’d also never played at The Home Depot Center, so that was cool.

On finding positives in the game:
“As a team, there are definitely things for us to work on but there are also good things to take from it so we move on from there.”

On the Revolution attack:
“I thought that we had more possession in their half of the field in the second half and we had a bit more combination play and were looking to the forwards a little bit more.”

Los Angeles Galaxy Head Coach Bruce Arena

On tonight’s game:
“We are certainly happy with the three points in the opening game. We struggled last year to get the three points, it took us (five) games, however, tonight’s performance was incomplete over the 90 minutes. I think we were sloppy in the first ten minutes of the second half. Our passing could have been better throughout the night. I think both teams played with a number of young players and got some valuable experience. I think we had a very good performance from our center backs. Edson Buddle had some very good moments holding the ball and being dangerous throughout the night. So I think overall it was a solid performance, we defended for the most part pretty well. We got a little bit sloppy on a couple of plays during the match I think overall for the first time out it was a good performance. I think again we were pretty sloppy and tried to finish them up with the second goal we had our opportunities to do that both in the first and second half so that part certainly was not good. We know that we have to get better as a team but it is a good experience and we know we have a tough match ahead of us on Thursday against Chivas USA.”

On the play of his three Brazilians:
“I thought they played pretty well. I thought Leonardo was rock solid at center back Juninho had a pretty good night though he could have been better with the final pass at times. Alex we played him in a position he really didn’t play much in preseason and I thought he responded pretty well. We just started playing him at left midfield this week so I thought for the most part that was pretty good for his first time out.”

On the rest of the squad:
“I also said that our young player Michael Stephens played very well for the last 10-12 minutes to kill off the game. Landon [Donovan] was pretty solid maybe even a little charitable towards the end of the game but his leadership was good tonight. I think [Dema] Kovalenko had a solid match. The guys for the most part were pretty solid tonight but we certainly could be better but a little disappointed we didn’t get that second goal.”

On Edson Buddle:
“He is definitely over his injury problems. Edson had a pretty good performance over the 90 minutes he battled pretty hard tonight and had some pretty good moments. He did a good job holding the ball obviously an important goal. I think this could be a good year for him I hope he stays healthy.”

On the play of his center backs:
“It is very important I think with the combination of Berhalter with that group we are pretty solid in that position and we are going to need that through out the season.”

On finishing chances:
“It could have been better there were a few chances out there for us to get the second goal. During the night we didn’t do well at all with our last pass, the last look at the goal we could be a bit better with that.”

LA Galaxy forward Landon Donovan

His overall thoughts:
“Pretty good performance. We had a few let downs in the early part of the second half where if they are better they probably score. Having said that, we had a few chances to score in the second half. I’m happy with the win, but certainly know we can play a lot better.”

On the play of Edson Buddle:
“Edson was great tonight. He’s looked really sharp since I got back. If we play a little better, we can get him the ball in better spots but I think overall he was very good.”

On his late scoring chance:
“It was frustrating. On another day if a team scores and equalizes that’s going to hurt us a lot. I have to do better.”

On the overall play of the midfield…
“It wasn’t bad. We can be a lot better with the ball. They did a good job of playing defensively, but as we get more comfortable with each other, and with Juninho and Alex, who played a lot of minutes, we will get better.”

On the play of the defense:
“We’ve solidify ourselves defensively. Where in the past we had issues, now we have some solid center backs and some good cover at center back and we’re happy with that.”

On his initial thoughts of the three Brazilians:
“I thought Leonardo was very good. I think Alex played pretty well, but he has to get used to the pace here. It’s probably different than what he is used to playing in Brazil. And Juninho had some moments where he was being creative, but he is going to get better as time goes on.”

LA Galaxy forward Edson Buddle

On his goal:
“It was a good ball. Landon had a good service, good pace, and I was able to redirect the ball on target. Because of the velocity the ball had it made it easy to redirect.”

On getting his first goal of the season in the opener:
“I think I’m getting settled. Bruce has given me a little confidence and I’m certainly glad being here so it really helps going forward.”

LA Galaxy defender Todd Dunivant

On the win:
“Last year we were a very counter attacking team. With Landon up there, he’s the best there is, and we saw that at the end where he plays that ball to Alex (Cazumba) and we almost score. It’s something we always have in our bag and teams always have trouble stopping him. I don’t know how you stop Landon Donovan in the open field.”

On the absence of Shalrie Joseph for New England:
“Shalrie makes a huge difference for them. That’s a big loss, but they’ve had a few key departurs (over the years) with (Taylor) Twellman being out, (Matt) Reiss being out and (Steve) Ralston.”
