Eric Bengtson is entering his second season with the New England Revolution, and his first as Director of Sports Medicine & Head Athletic Trainer. He joined the club’s staff in 2020 as Rehabilitation coordinator and Athletic Trainer, before ascending to his current role ahead of the 2021 MLS season. As Director of Sports Medicine, Eric manages the day-to-day operations of the Sports Medicine staff including supervision of MLS, USL, and Academy athletes. Eric is a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy (SCS), has a Master’s degree in Exercise & Sports Science (Athletic Training), and is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist with Distinction (CSCS*D).

Prior to joining the Revolution, Eric was a Physical Therapist at Ohio State University, where he worked with the men’s rugby team through the Jameson Crane Sports Medicine Institute, and served as an instructor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

From 2011-2016, Eric served as an Athletic Trainer at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where he worked primarily with the school’s soccer programs, managed the Olympic sports medical facility, oversaw the sports medicine internship program, and taught in the Athletic Training Education Program. In 2016, he served as the Director of Athletic Training Services before returning to school to complete his doctorate work in Physical Therapy.

Eric has been an Athletic Trainer since 2008 and received a Master’s degree in Exercise & Sports Science (Athletic Training) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010, where he worked primarily with the women’s soccer program. He has had a variety of committee responsibilities and has presented at local, regional, national, and international medical conferences.
