Biography

How Acquired: Selected by the Revolution in the first round (12th overall) of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft

Igwe brings the ability to play anywhere on the left side of the field or anywhere across the back … very fast ... a solid defender who can also get forward, Igwe comes from a family with a strong soccer background … his father, Tony, had a successful career as a Nigeria international and both of his siblings played soccer at Santa Clara … a member of the 2007 Generation adidas program who graduated to senior roster status after the 2009 season ... signed a contract with MLS after his freshman season at Santa Clara ... traveled to Spain (2007) and England (2008) with a select Generation adidas team.

2009: Made 11 regular-season MLS appearances, including five starts. Saw time at every position in a four-man backline (left back, right back and center back), while he also played as a left back in a three-man backline, and as a left midfielder. Overall, made 15 total appearances, including appearances in the U.S. Open Cup and SuperLiga. Filled in as a central defender against the LA Galaxy (July 4) when Jay Heaps was away with the U.S. National Team and Emmanuel Osei was suspended. Replaced Heaps at left back in the 10th minute of the 1-0 loss to Dallas (Sept. 30) when Heaps suffered a left hamstring strain, and started the next match – a 1-1 draw with Colorado (Oct. 3) – marking his first start since July 4. Played the second half of the playoff-clinching, 1-0 win over Columbus (Oct. 25) at left back after Emmanuel Osei left the game at halftime with a left ankle injury. Started and played all 120 minutes at right back of the team’s U.S. Open Cup match against the Harrisburg City Islanders (June 30). Appeared in all three group-stage matches of SuperLiga, starting the Kansas City (June 24) and Atlas (June 28) matches, at left back but missed the semifinal with a left hamstring strain.

2008: Made 11 regular-season appearances, including six starts. Overall, made 22 appearances - and 16 starts - in all competitions, including regular season, playoffs, SuperLiga, U.S. Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League. Played all over the backline, including left, center and right in a four-man backline, and left back in a three-man backline. Started all five matches in SuperLiga 2008, helping the team to the championship. Started all three of the team's matches in the U.S. Open Cup. Appeared in both matches against Joe Public FC in the CONCACAF Champions League. Also made eight appearances in the Reserve Division, scoring one goal - the game-winning goal against New York (June 18). Selected to play with MLS' Generation adidas team in its postseason tour of England.

2007: Did not make a first-team appearance, but made 11 appearances - all starts - for the Revs' reserves. Scored one reserve-team goal, the eventual game-winner against the Columbus reserves on June 17. Spent large parts of the season playing with the U.S. Under-20 team in preparations leading up to the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup and then in Canada at the tournament, where he made two appearances. Selected to play with MLS' Generation adidas team in its postseason tour of Spain.

COLLEGE: Played one season at Santa Clara, garnering All-West Coast Conference honorable mention and All-Freshman Team honors, helping the Broncos advance to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Scored five goals and added three assists playing as a forward.

U.S. NATIONAL TEAM: A member of the U.S. Under-20 team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2007 Under-20 World Cup in Canada ... had 20 caps and scored one goal with the U20s … made two substitute appearances at the U20 World Cup … had five appearances for the U20s in 2006, scoring one goal ... joined U.S. Soccer's Residency Program at the IMG Soccer Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) in Sept. 2004 ... made 15 appearances - 11 starts - at left back for the U17s in 2005, scoring five goals and adding two assists ... scored his first international goal against Canada on April 24, 2005.

PERSONAL: Son of Tony and Lisa Igwe ... his brother, Kelechi, also played soccer at Santa Clara, while his sister, Chioma, transferred to Santa Clara from Cal in 2006 to play soccer … is the second member of his family to play for U.S. Soccer as Chioma also has U.S. U19 National Team experience ... Chioma was drafted by the Chicago Red Stars in the fourth round (28th overall) of the 2009 Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) College Draft … his father Tony was born in Jos Plateau, Nigeria, and represented his country in the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968, captaining the Nigeria National Team during World Cup qualifying tournaments in 1969 and 1973 ... Tony also played collegiate soccer at the University of San Francisco, where he was a member of three national championship teams.
