Biography

How Acquired: Selected by the Revolution in the first round (fifth overall) in the 2007 MLS Super Draft.

A two-footed, wide midfielder, Thompson excels when running at defenders … plays without fear and has proven to be a solid ball-winner ... uses his outstanding pace to good effect … his game-winning goal in the final of the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup gave the Revs their first cup championship in club history.

2008: Made 19 regular-season appearances, including eight starts. Recorded one assist in regular-season action. Overall, made 26 appearances in all competitions, including regular season, U.S. Open Cup, SuperLiga, CONCACAF Champions League and MLS Cup Playoffs. Missed the first four games of the season with a left heel injury. Made his first appearance at New York (April 19). Made his first start since MLS Cup 2007 at FC Dallas (April 24), playing all 90 minutes at right midfield. Recorded his first-career regular-season assist on Jeff Larentowicz's goal against Chivas USA (Sept. 11). Made three substitute appearances in SuperLiga during the group phase. Started the U.S. Open Cup semifinal at D.C. United (Aug. 12) at right back, but was sent off following his second yellow card midway through the second half. Appeared in both matches against Joe Public FC in the CONCACAF Champions League qualifying round. Entered as a sub in the away leg in Trinidad (Aug. 26) before starting the return leg in Foxborough (Sept. 2). Appeared as a substitute in both of the Revs' playoff games against Chicago.

2007: Made 27 appearances, including 11 starts, and then started all four postseason games. Played 90 minutes in six of his regular-season starts. Made his MLS debut on opening day on April 7, starting on the left wing at Chicago and playing 90 minutes. Scored his first professional goal against Chicago on May 6 in the 3-1 victory. Started four straight games (June 16 against Columbus through July 7 against Chivas USA), playing on both the left and right wings. Scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute in the final of the U.S. Open Cup against Dallas on Oct. 3. Started on the right wing in an altered Revs lineup - with Steve Ralston as the attacking midfielder - in each of the last three MLS games of the regular season and in each of the four playoff games. Was one of the Revs' top players in the 2007 postseason. Earned the assist on Taylor Twellman's spectacular bicycle-kick goal that stood as the game-winner over Chicago in the Eastern Conference Championship on Nov. 8.

COLLEGE: Led Wake Forest in goals with seven - including five game-winning strikes - in 2006 … had 10 career assists as he helped Wake Forest advance to the 2006 NCAA College Cup for the first time in school history … earned ACC All-Tournament honors as a senior and was also an ACC All-Freshman selection in 2003 … finished his four-year career with 16 goals, including 14 in his junior and senior seasons combined … seven of his 16 career goals were game-winning strikes, including five as a senior.

PERSONAL: Full name is Thomas Wells Thompson … is the son of Mark and Kathryn Thompson … has an older brother, John Mark, and a younger sister, Mary Kathryn ... was a political science major at Wake Forest ... was the highest-drafted soccer player out of Wake Forest in program history, and the fourth-highest drafted student-athlete in Demon Deacon Athletics history behind basketball's Tim Duncan (No. 1 in the 1997 NBA draft) and Chris Paul (No. 4 in the 2005 NBA draft) and baseball's Kyle Sleeth (No. 3 in the 2003 MLB draft) ... enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time ... listens to country music and his favorite movie is Braveheart ... his favorite types of food are seafood and Southern cuisine ... his recovery from an early-season heel injury in 2008 was aided by a friend in North Carolina who makes orthotics ... the friend performed minor "shoe surgery" to his boot to relieve pressure on Thompson's heel, cutting a round, quarter-sized hole in the back of his boots, which he wore for the rest of the season ... has traveled to Eastern Africa each of the past three offseasons to participate in faith-based missions in small villages.
