Biography

How Acquired: Selected by the Revolution in the fourth round (45th overall) of the 2002 SuperDraft

Leonard gives the coaching staff an option at both left back and left-sided midfielder with his workrate, quickness and man-marking acumen ... now in his fifth full season with the Revs, Marshall continues to improve his skill on the ball and serves a good cross into the box from the left flank ... originally signed as a developmental player, Leonard progressed to the Revs senior roster and regular starter - he is a great example of a player rising through the ranks of the MLS system.

2006: Made one appearance before missing the rest of the season after suffering a ruptured left Achilles tendon on April 24 in a scrimmage against Boston College at Gillette Stadium. Underwent reconstructive surgery that evening and spent the rest of the season rehabilitating after being placed on MLS' season-ending injury list on May 24. Resumed full-team training during the MLS Cup Playoffs.

2005: Was a regular starter for the Revolution on the left side of the midfield. Started 25 of the 27 games in which he appeared during the regular season, and appeared in two games - starting both - in the MLS Cup Playoffs. Scored his first MLS career goal in the 31st minute on April 23 at D.C. United. Added an assist on Clint Dempsey's game-winning goal against Chivas USA on April 30.

2004: More than doubled his number of appearances in 2003 (10), appearing in 25 regular-season games and three postseason matches. Saw time at midfield and in the defense. Registered his first MLS career point with an assist on Taylor Twellman's goal against Dallas on Oct. 2, 2004. Played one of his best games in a Revs uniform in the Eastern Conference Championship match at D.C. Assisted Twellman on the first New England goal in that match with a pinpoint cross from the left wing.

2003: Composed, athletic and hard-working, Leonard made the Revolution roster a year after being drafted by the Revs. Appeared in 10 games in his first full MLS season, starting five games mostly as an outside back. By mid-season, he found himself filling in during big games at left back. Made his first-career MLS start on Aug. 30 against Chicago in a 5-1 New England victory. Started all three of the Revs' MLS Cup Playoff games, playing all 281 minutes of action.

2002: Leonard, though initially selected by the Revolution in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft, did not sign with the squad until July 30 after exploring playing options in Europe. Did not see any time on the field.

COLLEGE: A four-year performer at Virginia … finished his career with the Cavaliers ranked fifth in career minutes played (8,226) and seventh in career games played (89) … helped UVa reach three straight ACC Tournament championship matches (1999-01) … was a member of the Virginia defensive unit that did not surrender a goal during the 2001 ACC season as the Cavs became the first team in ACC history to post shutouts in every league contest.

NATIONAL TEAM: A former member of the U.S. Under-20 and Under-17 National Teams.

QUICK KICKS: Was married to his wife Courtney this past off-season … son of Tommy and Kathleen Leonard ... has two brothers and one sister ... trained with clubs in Belgium and France during the 2002 season … was a Parade and NSCAA All-America at Shaw High School in Georgia ... favorite actor is Denzel Washington ... favorite musicians include B.B. King, Eric Clapton and Lionel Richie ... volunteers his time as a soccer coach for under-privileged youths and is one of the Revolution's most active members in community and philanthropic efforts ... enjoys reading and playing the guitar ... favorite soccer memory is winning a national championship with U-18 club team Atlanta Lighting SC ... his photograph appeared on cover of Spring 2006 issue of Concierge Magazine.
