FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New Revolution Under-16 and Under-18 youth teams competed at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase at the Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz., earlier this week, with both teams playing three games each from Saturday, Dec. 5 through Tuesday, Dec. 8. The U-16s earned a pair of draws en route to a 0-1-2 record, while the U-18s earned a win in their final game to finish 1-2-0.
The U-16s opened play on Dec. 5, earning a 4-4 draw against Solar Soccer Club (Dallas, Texas) in an exceptionally entertaining game. Felix DeBona (Everett, Mass.) put the Revs ahead in the 14th minute and again in the 54th minute, but Solar fought back to knot the score in the final minutes of the match. Other Revolution goal-scorers included Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.) and Douglas Silviera (Revere, Mass.).
After a day of rest, New England next met Scott Gallagher Soccer Club (St. Louis, Mo.) on Monday, Dec. 7. The Revs created an ample amount of scoring opportunities ? registering 10 shots and 11 corner kicks ? but were unable to capitalize against an organized Scott Gallagher team, and came away with a scoreless draw.
In their final game of the showcase on Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Revs U-16s played South Carolina United (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) ? a team which is currently near the top of its Academy division ? to a 4-1 loss. New England created multiple chances in the first half, hitting the post on two occasions and earning several corner kicks. South Carolina, however, converted twice in that time ? once in the first ten minutes and again off an own goal in the 39th minute. The Revs continued to play with heart, but were unable to gain a foothold early in the second half and surrendered two additional goals. Fagundez netted an impressive consolation in the 74th minute, sending a free kick from 20 yards out over the wall and past a frozen South Carolina goalkeeper.
The U-18s also opened against Solar SC on Dec 5., falling 1-0 to the Dallas side. A slow start put the Revs behind in the 22nd minute, but an improved performance in the second half earned the team eight shots on goal. Despite numerous chances, New England was unable to register the equalizer.
New England met Scott Gallagher SC during a torrential downpour in its second match of the showcase. The Missouri team netted a goal in the 34th minute of play, sending the Revs into halftime with a one-goal deficit. New England was unable to turn things around in the second half, which resulted in a 2-0 loss and left the Revs still looking for their first points of the showcase.
Like the U-16s, the U-18 Revolution squad played South Carolina United in its final game in Phoenix. South Carolina found the back of the net first in the 50th minute, but the Revs showed great determination and leveled the score with a Josh Vlasich (East Kingston, N.H.) strike in the 77th minute. Marlon Ramalho (Framingham, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute, his shot from 20 yards out finding the back of the net. Other key performers were Gustavo Santos (Framingham, Mass.) and Michael Rincon (Malden, Mass.), whose speed on the wings greatly contributed to the team’s success. Captain Kenny Kolbeck (Derry, N.H.) and goalkeeper Chris Foley (South Windcor, Conn.) also marshaled the team from the back, keeping the Revs motivated and organized through the final minutes of the match.
Outside of regular training, both the U-16s and U-18s are off until mid-February when the Revs will begin their second season in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Kicking off a series of road matches, the Revolution youth teams will play FC Greater Boston at Citizens Bank Fields on Saturday, Feb. 13.
