Protected players will not be available for selection during Wednesday’s expansion draft for the Philadelphia Union
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution today announced the club’s list of protected players for the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft, the results of which are scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. ET by Major League Soccer. The Philadelphia Union, which is set to begin play in 2010 as Major League Soccer’s 16th team, will make 10 selections in the draft, but will not be permitted to draft more than one player from each team.
Each MLS club was allowed to submit a list of 11 protected players, leaving the rest of the roster available for selection to Philadelphia. However, all players who did not graduate from the Generation adidas program are automatically protected. Revolution midfielder Nico Colaluca did not graduate from Generation adidas and is therefore automatically protected, while defenders Kevin Alston and Amaechi Igwe have both graduated from the program.
