FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution technical staff will conduct an invitation-only tryout tonight, Monday, Jan. 5, in advance of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, which will take place on Thursday, Jan. 15, in St. Louis, Mo.

The invitation-only tryout will begin at 6 p.m. at the Dana-Farber Field House on the grounds of Gillette Stadium. Revolution head coach Steve Nicol, assistant coach Paul Mariner and goalkeepers coach Gwynne Williams, as well as Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns, will oversee approximately 30 Revolution hopefuls who will attempt to impress the Revolution technical staff ahead of next week’s MLS SuperDraft.

Members of the media are welcome to attend the Revs’ tryout this evening, but must notify the Revolution Communications office by 5 p.m. today in order to gain admittance.

REVS TO OPEN 2009 SEASON AT SAN JOSE ON MARCH 21
The Revolution will open the 2009 season with a road match at the San Jose Earthquakes during MLS First Kick on Saturday, March 21, while the club will host its home opener on Saturday, April 4, against FC Dallas at Gillette Stadium … the Revs and Earthquakes will meet at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., at 10:30 p.m. ET, one of seven games in the league’s opening week of play … in Week 2, the Revolution will travel to play the MLS Cup runners-up and rival New York Red Bulls on Saturday, March 28 … the league’s full schedule and broadcast information for the 2009 season is expected to be released in early February.

2009 MLS SUPERDRAFT SET FOR THURSDAY, JAN. 15 IN ST. LOUIS
The 2009 MLS SuperDraft will take place on Thursday, Jan. 15, in St. Louis, Mo. … New England holds a league-high seven selections (two picks each in the first, second and third rounds and one selection in the fourth round), including the 10th and 15th overall picks … last year, the Revolution selected defender Rob Valentino with its top selection in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft.

REVS SIGN MIDFIELDER MICHAEL VIDEIRA
New England announced on Dec. 29 that the club signed midfielder Michael Videira to a Major League Soccer contract to play for the Revs … Videira, who turns 23 on Jan. 6, was originally selected by the Revolution in the second round (18th overall) of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, but chose to pursue options with European clubs rather than sign a contract with Major League Soccer at that time … the former U.S. Under-18 and Under-20 National Team member signed with Hamilton Academical of the Scottish Premier League in August, but suffered several injuries during his stint and didn’t make a first-team appearance for the club before being released in mid-December … an attacking midfielder, Videira played his college soccer at Duke, where he was a three-time semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy (2005, 2006, 2007) … the Milford, Mass., native is also a former standout at Noble and Greenough School, where he was a teammate of current Revs defender Chris Tierney.

TRIO OF REVS DEPART
Defender Michael Parkhurst, midfielder Khano Smith and forward Adam Cristman have all left the Revolution this offseason, although all three have departed via different routes … Parkhurst – the 2005 MLS Rookie of the Year and the 2007 MLS Defender of the Year – made a free transfer to Danish club FC Nordsjælland after his contract with the Revolution expired at the end of 2008 … Smith – a member of the Bermuda National Team – was selected by Seattle Sounders FC with one of its 10 selections in the 2008 MLS Expansion Draft on Nov. 26 … Cristman – a 2007 MLS Rookie of the Year finalist – was traded to the Kansas City Wizards in exchange for allocation money and the Wizards’ natural third-round selection in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft … additionally, New England waived goalkeeper Doug Warren and forward Jose Angulo, while letting the developmental contracts of Joe Germanese, Gary Flood, Brandon Tyler, Brandon Manzonelli and Sam Brill expire.

NEW ENGLAND TO DEFEND SUPERLIGA CROWN IN 2009
The Revolution, which was crowned champion of North America after winning SuperLiga 2008, will defend its title as one of four Major League Soccer teams to compete in SuperLiga 2009 … New England is joined in the tournament by fellow MLS clubs Chicago Fire, Kansas City Wizards and Chivas USA … the four Mexican participants as well as group pairings, dates and locations for the matches will be announced at a later date … competitive criteria determined which clubs would represent MLS in SuperLiga 2009, with MLS Commissioner Don Garber announcing that teams could compete in either the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League or SuperLiga, but not both, as the Revolution did in 2008 … the Columbus Crew, New York Red Bulls, D.C. United and Houston Dynamo qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League, while the top four teams not competing in that tournament were then selected for SuperLiga 2009.
