TORONTO – The 10-man Toronto FC reserves earned a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution reserves on Tuesday morning on a rain-drenched BMO Field. Jarrod Smith scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute after the Revs' Wells Thompson drew – and converted – the game-tying penalty kick in the 62nd minute.
The reserve match was a make-up game after the teams’ originally-scheduled match in Toronto on Sunday, Aug. 25, was postponed so the Revs could travel to Trinidad for its CONCACAF Champions League qualifying match.
With the win, Toronto improved to 5-4-0 (15 pts.) in the reserve division, while the Revolution fell to 2-6-2 (8 pts.) with the loss.
The teams played a scoreless first half, despite several quality chances for both sides. Toronto’s Abdus Ibrahim snuck in behind the Revs’ defense in the 18th minute, but New England starting keeper Brad Knighton dove to his right for the save along the post. Johann Smith then had a go minutes later when his rip from 18 yards was deflected by Knighton on a full stretch.
The Revs saw Amaechi Igwe’s 30-blast go just high and wide in the 25th, before Brandon Manzonelli had a pair of chances. In the 28th, Toronto keeper Brian Edwards made a reaction save on his point-blank header from four yards off a Thompson corner kick. In the 34th minute, Manzonelli’s diving header off a Chris Tierney free kick was just high of frame.
Despite the scoreless first half, the teams combined for three goals in the second. Toronto got on the board first in the 50th when Daniel Nascimento connected on Johann Smith’s cross to put the Reds up 1-0.
Ten minutes later, Thompson broke into the area and was tackled by Edwards near the top of the box. Edwards was shown a straight red card and Thompson was awarded a penalty kick. Thompson stepped up to take the shot on substitute goalkeeper David Mansalve, but his first shot was saved. However, the linesman signaled that a player had entered the area early, and Thompson was awarded a second attempt, which he converted to tie the score at 1-1. Toronto substitute midfielder Derek Gaudette, who entered at the half, was removed from the game following Edwards’ red card, leaving Toronto with 10 men for the final 30 minutes of the game.
The tie didn’t last long as Jarrod Smith put Toronto back on top in the 71st minute, slotting in Tyler Rosenlund’s through ball past substitute goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio.
Thompson and Gary Flood had chances to equalize late in the game, both coming on the same sequence. In the 85th minute, Flood ran on to a loose ball at the top of the penalty arc, but Mansalve dove to make the save, leading to a Revolution corner. On the clearance of the service, Thompson got off a shot in traffic, but it was headed off the line by the Toronto defense.
Knighton made three saves in the first half, while Saccoccio made two in the second for the loss. Edwards made two saves in his 60 minutes of action, while Mansalve made three saves to finish the game and earn the win.
The Revolution reserves return to action on Friday, Oct. 17, when they travel to face the D.C. United reserves at 9:30 a.m. at the RFK Stadium Practice Fields.
