FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - In a battle between the first-place teams in the Eastern and Western Conferences, the New England Revolution and Houston Dynamo played to a 3-3 draw on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the teams combined for five goals in the first 21 minutes of the second half as the teams played to their third tie in four regular-season meetings all-time.
New England’s (7-3-6, 27 pts.) Pat Noonan and Taylor Twellman each scored one goal and added one assist, while Houston’s (10-5-4, 34 pts.) Brian Ching scored twice a minute apart - in the 60th and 61st minutes - to pace the visitors.
The Revs snapped the Dynamo’s MLS-record scoreless streak at 726 minutes in the 32nd minute when Noonan ran onto a Twellman pass and chipped Houston keeper Pat Onstad from 19 yards, finding the inside corner of the goal for a 1-0 Revs lead.
The Revs’ lead lasted until the 49th minute, when Houston’s Dwayne DeRosario ripped a 30-yard blast from Eddie Robinson past Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis to level the score. The Revs wasted little time in reclaiming the lead, however, as Twellman volleyed in a Noonan pass - off a botched Dynamo clearance - two minutes later in the 51st to put the Revs ahead, 2-1.
Ching responded with his two goals to re-tie the game and then give the Dynamo a lead, tapping in a Joseph Ngwenya cross in the 60th minute before putting the visitors ahead one minute later in the 61st, when he freed himself for an unmarked header six yards out off a free kick from Stuart Holden.
Down a goal at home, Noonan earned a free kick in the 64th minute several yards off the corner of the penalty area. Steve Ralston’s service was two-handed by DeRosario at the end of the Dynamo’s wall, steps inside the 18-yard box. Referee Kevin Stott pointed to the penalty spot, awarding the Revolution a penalty kick, and Shalrie Joseph stepped up for the attempt. His first try - saved by Onstad to his left - was called back after several Houston players were in the area before Joseph contacted the ball, but he made no mistake on his second attempt, knotting the score at 3-3 by burying the shot in the left side of the net as Onstad again dove to his left.
New England rookie forward Adam Cristman had a chance to give the Revs the win in the final minute of stoppage time, but his header off a Twellman pass narrowly went high and over the crossbar.
The Revs return to action on Saturday, June 28, when they travel to face Real Salt Lake at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. Kickoff is set for 9:30 p.m. ET, and Fox Soccer Channel will televise the game live, while the WEEI Radio Network will also broadcast the game.
