Houston - The Houston Dynamo reserve squad got its fourth win of the season on Sunday, July 23, defeating the New England Revolution Reserves, 4-1, in a hot and oppressively humid morning at Robertson Stadium.
The game saw both teams battle back and forth during the first half. Houston, however, opened up the scoreboard at the 15th minute of action, after a corner kick by Stuart Holden. Taking advantage of a loose ball inside the box, Chris Wondolowski put the Dynamo 1-0 up on the board with a rebound goal in a scrum in front of the net.
The Dynamo scored once more at the 26th minute, after Revolution defender Pat Haggerty put the ball in the back of his own net while trying to clear a cross into the box by Wondolowski from the right side of the area.
New England netted a goal of its own in the 35th minute. Playing out of the back, Tony Lochhead sent a long pass down the right wing to Kyle Brown, who worked into the penalty area. One-on-one with Dynamo goalkeeper Zach Wells, Brown put in a low, hard shot to the near post that Wells was unable to stop, pulling the Revs within one goal, 2-1. The goal was Brown’s first in reserve action of the season.
During the second half, the Dynamo continued to attack, and put the game away for good at the 63rd minute of play. Marcus Storey worked around one Revs defender at the left corner of the 18-yard box snuck in a shot on the near post on a severe angle for first goal in reserve-division play.
Wondolowski scored his second goal of the match at the 83rd minute after Patrick Ianni found him with a long pass over the top of the Revs backline, sending in Wondolowski alone on New England keeper Doug Warren.
Warren made several key saves in the game, including two point-blank stops on breakaways in the first half, and several close-range shots in the second half as the Dynamo picked up its attack.
Two Revs players made their first appearances of the season in the match. Midfielder/forward Khano Smith saw his first action of 2006 after spending the first half of the season rehabilitating his knee after off-season surgery. Additionally, midfielder Miguel Gonzalez saw his first action as a member of the Revolution after signing as a developmental player earlier in the week.
With the win, Houston (4-4-0) now has 12 points in reserve action, while the Revolution Reserves moved to 0-5-3 (3 pts.) on the season.
