FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final between the New England Revolution and FC Dallas will be played on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 10 p.m. ET at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 and Univision Deportes Network for the second-straight year.
FC Dallas hosts the final by virtue of finishing ahead of New England Revolution in the Hosting Priority Draw, held on July 21 at Soccer House in Chicago.
The two teams arrive at the championship match after exciting Semifinal wins. New England used goals from Kei Kamara, Je-Vaughn Watson, and Teal Bunbury to down the Chicago Fire, 3-1, on Aug. 9. The next day, FC Dallas got late extra time strikes from Matt Hedges and Victor Ulloa to defeat the host LA Galaxy, 2-1, on Aug. 10.
This marks the Revolution’s third appearance in the U.S. Open Cup Final, previously competing in the championship match in 2001 and 2007. The 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final serves as a rematch of the 2007 Championship, when the Revolution defeated FC Dallas, 3-2, for the major title in a game also played in Frisco, Texas.
This year's winning team will receive $250,000 and a berth in the 2017-18 CONCACAF Champions' League. The runner-up will earn $60,000.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer's national club championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 102 consecutive years dating from 1914. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
