Quotes: Jay Heaps, Chris Tierney and Kelyn Rowe | July 6

Scott Caldwell vs. NYCFC

New England Revolution Head Coach Jay Heaps
On the loss and the performance of both clubs:

Coach Heaps: “Obviously, a frustrating result. Obviously, you come out here and you’ve got to credit New York [City]. I thought they were really good on the night. They took their chance and buried it. I thought we had enough to score, but I didn’t think we were clinical enough at the right times.”

On how the non-call on Kelyn Rowe early in the game affected the team:

Coach Heaps: “I think it changes a lot. We wanted to come out and strike early and put them under pressure. We felt like we had some quality chances to do so. I felt like, it looked like there wasn’t much ball played on that one. In the end, even when we play a good team, we have to be able to rally and come back. Unfortunately, we didn’t do enough tonight.”

On the play of New York City FC’s star players in Andrea Pirlo, Frank Lampard, and David Villa:

Coach Heaps: “They were excellent. There’s not much you can do. I thought as the game went on, we got to them a little bit more. They were really good to start the game. Credit and tip your hat to those guys. They’re big-time players. We knew that they were going to be good. We didn’t get on them tough enough, gave them a little too much, and they took advantage.”

On his instructions for substitutes Daigo Kobayashi and Femi Hollinger-Janzen:

Coach Heaps: “Energy and bring life to it. We switched a little bit to more of a 4-4-2, just to kind of throw them off a little bit. I thought we created a lot. I thought those two guys in particular came in and Andrew [Farrell]. I thought our subs were good, brought some fresh life. I think Femi was near goal on a couple of occasions, but excellent when he came in.”

On the importance of quickly moving on from this game with another game coming on Saturday:

Coach Heaps: “Obviously, it’s a tough stretch. Now we can just roll up the sleeves and turn around and play on Saturday. Be prepared for a good Columbus [Crew] team.”

New England Revolution Defender Chris Tierney
On how the offense moves on from a game like tonight’s game

Tierney: “We just got to have a short memory. You know, we have two days off and then we’re back at it at home again, so we expect to put up a better performance and get a better result on Saturday regardless of us being on short rest. There’s a lot of work to do to recover but when you have a result like that, you want the next game to come as quickly as possible and [Saturday against Columbus] is, so that’s a good thing for us.”

On how the Revs managed New York City FC’s three designated players

Tierney: “Well, the way that New York [City] plays is pretty unique. They pass the ball well. Those guys are class. It’s the reason that they’re world class players. They’re quality. We didn’t do a good enough job against them. It’s as simple as that, really. I mean, we had one play there where we turned off and they punished us, which is what you expect with players of that caliber so, overall, I don’t think they created a ton. [David] Villa hit the bar and besides the goal, I don’t really think they had a ton but it doesn’t really matter because they scored one and we scored zero.”

On how the team plans to improve on being more clinical in the final third  for Saturday’s game

Tierney: “Like I said, it’s just about putting it behind you. You know, you got to get your confidence back. If you come out without confidence, we’re going to get beat again and we’re not going to score goals, so our attacking players, and our whole 11 for that matter, has to come out with our chest out, expecting to win the game and try to get some confidence back, and hopefully the goals will come for us.”

New England Revolution Midfielder Kelyn Rowe
On how the match unfolded:

Rowe: “I thought we had a couple chances early and we didn’t finish them off, myself included. I was in one of those. Credit to them. It might have been an unorthodox goal, but they found a way to put it in the back of the net and we didn’t. ”

On what changed after the opening few minutes when the Revolution had scoring chances:

Rowe: “I thought they corrected their mistakes a little bit. We found a lot of space, whether it be a late run from behind or, you know, I thought Kei [Kamara] opened up, as well as Teal [Bunbury]. They made a couple changes, a couple tactical things, and we didn’t move the ball quick enough. That was it. We needed to move the ball side to side quicker. We found more space, we found more time, then guys like Teal [Bunbury] can go run a play, guys like Diego [Fagundez] and Lee [Nguyen] can run at players. We just didn’t move fast enough.”

On how they’re processing result of this game as they look forward to their next match:

Rowe: “Yeah, we may sound like a broken record saying that, you know: it’s a lot of quick turnarounds lately. You can see it somewhat in our legs a little bit, but mentally we just got to be strong. I think Saturday’s going to be a big test for us because that was halfway through the season right there. For us, it’s not good enough, so we need to pick it up and Saturday’s going to be a mental challenge.”

On the importance of upcoming games entering the second half of the season:

Rowe: “We’ve talked about the second half of the season being very important for us. We’ve been very good at it the past couple of years but this is the time that we need to turn it around, the time we need to pick it up and start winning games and going on streaks and solidify that playoff spot—that top of the East.”

New York City FC Head Coach Patrick Vieira
On his thoughts on the team’s performance:

Coach Vieira: “I think tonight we were really strong, really solid, and going back to New York with the three points was really important for us. I think the players really deserve the win today.”

On the team picking up four straight wins:

Coach Vieira: “I think we can always improve and having four wins on the road, that gives us confidence and a happy camp to keep working and keep doing what we believe. I think coming here wasn’t an easy place to take the three points...I think we showed a lot of personality. We stick to our principles. We managed to play from the back. We create so many chances, we create so many situations, we really had control of the game.”

On the influence of the team’s three stars in Andrea Pirlo, Frank Lampard, and David Villa:

Coach Vieira: “Fantastic. We are doing well, of course, because of those three players, four players that you mentioned, and a really good period. They are playing really good. They are dictating the tempo of our game and I think the way we want to play suits them really well and, of course, you need element players to perform. When you look at our goalkeeper Josh [Saunders], the way he performed today, outside back…We look solid in every position and I think if you come here, you need your 11 players to perform and tonight everyone was on the field to perform and perform well for the team.”

On starting all three Designated Players despite having a game on Sunday:

Coach Vieira: “I think the only question I asked them was how they were feeling after the [New York] Red Bull game and every one of them was feeling good. They wanted to play. We are in a really good period and there wasn’t any doubt in our mind about astro grass. It was just about how they were feeling after the game and when they told me that they were feeling good, there wasn’t any doubt in my mind that they should start. But it’s not just the three of them, it’s even the other players. When you look at the way we played in the last four games, they make it really difficult for me to drop any of them and I think this is why we are doing well. It’s because people are doing well, people want to play, and they are challenging the other ones and I think that’s what we need.”

On the game plan going into the game:

Coach Vieira: “I was really pleased, because we really stuck to our game plan. We wanted to force them wide and stop the essential penetration, because with the wingers coming inside, we didn’t want them to get the ball between the line. And I was really pleased because the distance between the line was really good. The five in the midfield worked really hard to stop them playing inside and then when we forced them wide, we tried to stop the crosses, but it was sometimes difficult. But when the ball was inside the box, we defended the crosses really well, and that’s why I am really pleased and really proud about the way the team performed today.”

On Jack Harrison’s development:

Coach Vieira: “He is a young talent. He still has some of the parts of his game that he needs to improve, but I think having Frank Lampard and [Andrea] Pirlo, Andoni [Iraola], and David Villa around him will help him to grow up and to be a better player. He’s still far away because sometimes people forget that he was out for four months and it will take time for him to be at his best, but the way he played – and you could see the last 15 minutes was really difficult for him physically – but he needs to go to that situation for him to be better and better.”

On who he credits for Frank Lampard’s goal:

Coach Vieira: “The team, because to play the way we did tonight was fantastic. We showed personality and the way we tried to play was really positive. The players love it and then when you have [Frank] Lampard inside the box, when you have [Andrea] Pirlo [who] can make the assist – we can score goals, we can make the assist – but the team performance will be something I will take from the game today.”

On his confidence in the team’s of style of play:

Coach Vieira: “It’s a consistency from what we try to do from the beginning of the season. We have the clear high [defense], the clear philosophy…and we want to impose ourselves and get into where the players really understand and they really enjoy to play that way. We have to keep working, because we still have a lot of part of the game we need to improve, but I think the way we played tonight can make the fans and the players really happy.”

New York City FC Midfielder Tommy McNamara
On the build-up of play leading to the goal:

McNamara: “I just had to get in behind the defense because Andrea [Pirlo] had time on the ball and made a run and did a very good job of finding me in behind the back line. I had enough time to turn and take a touch and put my head out. I saw Frank’s [Lampard] movement a little bit away from the ball and saw David [Villa] coming in behind him so I just tried to smash it in there hard and kind of hope that it turned out the way it did. Frank did a really good job of getting his body in the way and redirecting it.”

On if things are coming together for the team after their fourth straight win:

McNamara: “I think from an organizational standpoint and a pure work ethic standpoint we have done really well. As a result of that, we have made it difficult on other teams and created a lot of chances to get goals. The more clean sheets we have is exactly what we want and what we need because we have some good players in and around the goal that we feel wouldn’t be able to create more chances and wouldn’t be able to take one, two, three touches or whatever it is that game.”

On how much confidence he has knowing that Frank Lampard is in the box:

McNamara: “David [Villa] was in there, too. It’s two of the best goal scorers in the history of soccer. I just tried to get my head up and put the ball in a spot where they would be able to do something with it and Frank [Lampard] did a great job.”

On the new turf at Gillette Stadium:

McNamara: “Yeah, it was new. I guess it’s something that once it gets a little more worn in it will be a little bit better. I just thought that it was heavy. There were a lot of rubber beads in it and it was moving a little bit. It is what it is. They were playing on the field, too. It is just part of the league. I think that when more matches are played on it, it will get a little more worn down and pick up and be a little bit better.”
