Revolution Defeat New York Cosmos, 3-2; Advance to Quarterfinals of Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The New England Revolution defeated the New York Cosmos, 3-2, in a comeback victory at Belson Stadium on Wednesday evening to advance to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals. The Revolution will host the quarterfinal match against the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, July 20, at Harvard University's Jordan Field.


After conceding the first goal of the game to the Cosmos, forward Teal Bunbury leveled the score at 1-1 with a shot into the upper part of the net from a tight angle. The Revolution fell behind again in the second half, but forward Kei Kamara, assisted by Diego Fagundez, evened the game at 2-2 in the 75th minute following a Cosmos turnover. The goal marked the first of Kamara’s Revolution career. Bunbury found the net for the second time in the match in the 83rd minute, giving the Revs a 3-2 lead, which they would not relinquish.

The Revolution will be back in action on Saturday, July 2, when the team travels to Canada for a matchup with the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo. The match marks the Revolution’s second away contest in Canada this season and will kick off at 5:30 p.m. ET. Comcast SportsNet will broadcast the match locally. Bunbury Brace Propels Revolution to Quarterfinals

Forward Teal Bunbury scored his first two 2016 U.S. Open Cup goals in the game, helping the Revolution win 3-2. The goals give Bunbury three goals across all competitions in 2016, with the forward last finding the back of the net in MLS competition at Orlando City SC on April 17.


Midfielder Diego Fagundez assisted on Bunbury’s first goal, his first assist of the 2016 U.S. Open Cup. Fagundez has recorded three assists in 2016 across all competitions. His first two assists came in the Revolution’s MLS season opening match at Houston on March 6.


Kamara Records First Revolution Goal and Assist

Forward Kei Kamara scored his first career Revolution goal across all competitions in the 75th minute, evening the score at 2-2. Kamara’s last goal came with Columbus Crew SC on May 7 vs. Montreal, when he scored twice.


Kamara added his first Revolution assist in the 83rd minute when he found Teal Bunbury for the game-winning goal. Kamara’s last assist came with Columbus on Sept. 19, 2015 at D.C. United.


Kamara has now made two substitute appearances for the Revolution in the 2016 U.S. Open Cup. He replaced Kelyn Rowe in the 69th minute at Carolina on June 15 and replaced Scott Caldwell in the 61st minute of tonight’s contest.


Revolution Play Mixture of Veterans, Younger Players

The Revolution starting lineup included eight players that have started at least five games this season in goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth, defenders Andrew Farrell and José Gonçalves, midfielders Scott Caldwell, Je-Vaughn Watson, and Diego Fagundez, and forwards Teal Bunbury and Juan Agudelo.


Midfielder Steve Neumann made his season debut in tonight’s match. Neumann has made 32 MLS appearances, including four starts, with New England since being drafted by the Revolution in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. Tonight’s appearance was Neumann’s fifth career U.S. Open Cup appearance and his first of 2016.


Revs to Play in U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals for Eighth Time

With tonight’s victory, the Revolution have advanced to the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals for the eighth time in club history.


The Revolution’s most recent Quarterfinal appearance came in 2014, where the Revs fell to the eventual Open Cup finalist Philadelphia Union in the Quarterfinals, 2-0.


Revs Defeat New York Cosmos in First Meeting between Clubs

The New England Revolution’s matchup with the New York Cosmos tonight marked the first time the two teams have played each other in any competition.


The Cosmos were the 18th opponent for the Revolution in New England’s Open Cup history.
