Revolution vs. D.C. United Daigo


FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The Revolution (1-2-5; 8 points) fell to Eastern Conference rival D.C. United (2-2-3; 9 points), 3-0, at RFK Stadium on Saturday evening. New England had a strong showing in the first half, but Lamar Neagle put the home team ahead in the 33rd minute, converting a penalty kick after Marclo Sarvas drew a foul on boundary of the box. D.C. United added two more goals late in the match, as Luciano Acosta and Álvaro Saborio found the back of the net in the 86th and 90th minutes, respectively.

GAME NOTES

Revolution record second loss of the season
·         With tonight’s loss, the Revolution are now 1-2-5 on the season. The club sits in sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference with eight points. 

Gonçalves returns, Revolution’s starting XI remains steady
·         Revolution captain Jose Gonçalves returned to the Revolution’s starting XI after missing last week’s match with a lower body injury. Jay Heaps’ lineup remained unchanged otherwise, with Teal Bunbury, Diego Fagundez, Andrew Farrell, Teal Bunbury, and Kelyn Rowe all making their eight consecutive starts to open the 2016 season. 

Je-Vaughn Watsoncontinues showcasing versatility


Revolution defender Je-Vaughn Watson shifted from right back to left back following Chris Tierney’s early exit from today’s match. Watson, who started and played 90 minutes at center back in last week’s draw vs. Orlando City SC, has now played every defensive position for New England in the last two weeks. 


Andrew Farrellstays one step ahead of D.C.’s attack
·         Andrew Farrell single-handedly prevented D.C. United scoring opportunities multiple times during the match, most notably breaking up a pair in the 57th and 61st minutes with the Revolution trailing by one goal. He finished the evening with nine interceptions, the most a Revolution player has registered in a game in 2016.  

Scott Caldwell, Daigo Kobayashikeep things calculated
·         Both Scott Caldwell and Daigo Kobayashi submitted composed performances in the midfield in today’s match. Caldwell turned in a pass accuracy percentage better than 93 percent for the fourth time this season. Kobayashi, meanwhile, completed all 12 of his pass attempts after entering the game as a substitute in the 79th minute. 

Gershon Koffiegets involved on both ends of the field
·         Midfielder Gershon Koffie paced New England in both tackles (7) and touches (84) in today’s match. Koffie’s seven tackles are the most a Revolution player has recorded in a match this season. His touches mark is also the third highest among all Revs players this season. Only Chris Tierney (92, 3/12 vs. DC) and Lee Nguyen (90, 3/20 vs. PHI) have recorded more in a single match. 

Kelyn Rowegets creative in the first half
·         Kelyn Rowe finished the first half with three chances created. Only three players, Chris Tierney (5, 3/26 vs. NYCFC), Lee Nguyen (4, 4/17 vs. Orlando), and Rowe (4, 4/9 vs. NYCFC), have recorded more chances created in a full match for the Revolution this season.

  •  6th minute – Teal Bunbury generates New England’s first scoring chance of the game, ringing a right-footed shot from outside the box off the bar. (WATCH HERE)
  • 14th minute – Bobby Shuttleworth makes a challenging and critical save early, turning aside a powerful shot attempt from D.C. United’s Fabian Espindola.

  • 63rd minute – Diego Fagundez gets his first on net after executing a give-and-go with Lee Nguyen, but Travis Worra makes corrals the curling shot to maintain United’s 1-0 lead.

  • 80th minute – Strong buildup play from Lee Nguyen opens space for a shot attempt from Je-Vaughn Watson. Travis Worra is unable to control the initial shot, but manages to secure a follow-up attempt from Daigo Kobayashi in front of the net. 
  • 82nd minute – Kelyn Rowe connects with Charlie Davies on a through ball inside the box, but Davies is called offside. Davies was in alone with Travis Worra in front of D.C.’s net.
