Revolution Play Orlando City SC to 2-2 Draw

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The Revolution (1-1-5; 8 points) played Orlando City SC (2-1-3; 9 points) to a 2-2 draw today at the Citrus Bowl, giving New England its second consecutive draw. Orlando midfielder Kaká converted a 2nd minute penalty to give the home side the early lead. Teal Bunbury recorded his 28th career goal and first of this season in the 34th minute to put the two teams level prior to halftime. Kevin Molino gave the Lions the lead in the third minute of stoppage time, but Lee Nguyen converted a penalty in the sixth minute of stoppage time to ensure a point for the Revolution. The Revolution will be back in action on Saturday, April 23rd at 5:30 p.m. ET, when the team visits RFK Stadium for a showdown with D.C. United. The match will be broadcast locally on CSN New England and on the radio by 98.5 The Sports Hub in English and WMVX 1570 AM “Nossa Radio” in Portuguese.

Bunbury Nets First Goal of Season

Forward Teal Bunbury scored his first goal of the 2016 MLS regular season by bringing down a Chris Tierney cross to his feet and scoring from inside the 18-yard box in the 37th minute. Bunbury has now scored 28 goals in his career, including nine with the Revolution.


Tierney recorded his first assist of the season, while Gershon Koffie registered his second assist in as many matches on Bunbury’s goal.


Nguyen Converts Revs First Penalty Opportunity

The New England Revolution were awarded their first penalty attempt of the season when a hand ball was called on Orlando’s Servando Carrasco in the fourth minute of stoppage time. The goal was Nguyen’s first of the season. The Revolution midfielder has now scored 35 goals in his MLS career, all of which are with the Revolution.


First Half Chances Aplenty

According to Opta, The Revs created nine first-half chances, which is the highest first-half total for New England in the 2016 MLS season. Only the New York Red Bulls (12 on 4/10 vs. SKC), Columbus Crew SC (11 on 4/16 vs. NYCFC), Houston Dynamo (11 on 4/10 vs. SEA) and Portland Timbers (10 on 3/20 vs. RSL) have posted a first-half with more chances created.


The Revs also posted season highs in first-half corners (5) and first-half crosses (12).

Lee Nguyen led all Revolution players in chances created (5), in what was the most chances created by any Revolution player in a single match this season.


Watson, Woodberry Have Strong Defensive Performance

Despite conceding a first-minute penalty, Revolution defender Je-Vaughn Watson was able to bounce back and lead the Revolution in a number of defensive statistics. Watson posted team highs in tackles won (3) and tied London Woodberry in team high for clearances (5).


Woodberry led all Revolution players in duels won (6).


Tierney Continues Strong Service

Prior to the start of MLS Week 7, Chris Tierney led the Eastern Conference in combined crosses and corners (50). Tierney led all Revolution players in combined crosses and corners (9) and has led all Revolution players in all seven of New England’s matches.


No Gonçalves; Tierney Sports Armband

  • Revolution captain and defender José Gonçalves was unavailable for selection due to injury. In his absence, defender Chris Tierney wore the captain’s armband . Tierney is the longest tenured Revolution player, having appeared in 192 matches since the 2008 MLS regular season.


One Change to the Eighteen

Seventeen of New England’s eighteen players available for selection were eligible for selection in  the Revs’ last match against Toronto FC. Gonçalves was unavailable for selection due to an injury, giving Donnie Smith a spot in the eighteen.


Watson Makes First Start at Centerback

With Gonçalves out, Je-Vaughn Watson became the third player to start at centerback this season. Goncalves and Andrew Farrell started at centerback for each of New England’s first six matches.

64th minute – Nguyen tries to curl a free kick into the upper-left corner of the net, but the ball goes left of the goal frame.


65th minute – Watson prevents Orlando’s Cyle Larin from scoring inside the six-yard box with a nicely timed tackle.


80th minute – Nguyen fires on net inside the 18-yard box, but Bendik makes the stop.


84th minute – A loose ball falls to Charlie Davies’ feet inside the 18-yard box, but Bendik comes out to make the stop.


86th minute – Tierney crosses to Davies who is unable to get solid contact on a headed attempt.
