RECAP: Revolution, New York City FC play to 1-1 draw

Kelyn Rowe and Femi vs. NYCFC

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The New England Revolution played New York City FC to a 1-1 draw at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Bobby Shuttleworth was put to work early, turning away a shot on goal from New York City FC stalwart David Villa in the second minute. However, NYCFC got on the scoreboard in the 10th minute, as Villa rang a shot off the crossbar that was headed into the net by midfielder Thomas McNamara.

New England settled in as the half wore on and generated a slew of chances. Moments after Teal Bunbury sailed a shot inches above the crossbar in the 36th minute, the Revolution found an equalizer in the 38th minute. Chris Tierney netted his first goal of the season on a free kick from the edge of the box, which deflected off an NYCFC defender and past goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

Revolution midfielder Gershon Koffie was issued a red card in the 54th minute, marking the second consecutive match the team has played with 10 men. The club continued generating pressure in the final third despite playing down a man. In the 75th minute, Teal Bunbury led Charlie Davies into a breakaway, but NYCFC goalkeeper Josh Saunders positioned himself perfectly to fend off the scoring chance.

Bobby Shuttleworth made a game-saving stop on former Revolution forward Patrick Mullins in the 90th minute, securing a draw for New England.
