CHESTER, Pa. – The New England Revolution lost to the Philadelphia Union 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Talen Energy Stadium. A pair of first half goals from Union forward C.J. Sapong, as well as a red card for New England’s Je-Vaughn Watson, proved too much for the Revolution to overcome. Newly signed 2016 MLS SuperDraft third round selection, Femi Hollinger-Janzen, made his Revolution debut, replacing Teal Bunbury in the 75^th minute. Revolution homegrown player Zach Herivaux also made his Revolution debut, replacing Scott Caldwell in the 86^th minute.

Following no clear-cut opportunities for either side in the first 15 minutes of play, Philadelphia’s C.J. Sapong opened the scoring in the 18^th minute to give the Union the first lead of the match. The Revs’ first chance came in the 22^nd minute, when Lee Nguyen fired from outside the box on a shot that was stopped by Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake.

The Union doubled their lead in the 33^rd minute, as Warren Creavalle found Sapong from the left-hand side of the 18-yard box, giving Sapong a first half brace. Nguyen came close to equalizing in the 35^th minute, hitting both posts from a free kick, however the ball remained outside of the net.

The game took a turn in the 36^th minute when New England right back Je-Vaughn Watson was sent off, receiving a straight red card for a foul on Philadelphia’s Roland Alberg. The Union were awarded a penalty in first half stoppage time as Andrew Farrell was whistled for making contact with Philadelphia’s Ilsinho in the box, but Bobby Shuttleworth saved the Brazilian’s penalty attempt.

Philadelphia looked to extend the lead in the 52^nd minute, as Chris Pontius fired from inside the box directly at Shuttleworth, who was able to make the save. The Union were awarded a second penalty in the 78^th minute, as Jose Goncalves fouled Sapong in the box, but Shuttleworth recorded his second penalty save, stopping Sebastien Le Toux’s attempt.

Juan Agudelo had the Revolution’s best opportunity of the second half in the 88^th minute, shooting just outside the right post in the center of the box, but a diving Blake was able to stop the forward’s attempt on net. The Union scored their third goal in second half stoppage time as Leo Fernandes played a low cross, which was struck by Le Toux.
