Revolution play to 0-0 draw with D.C. United in 2016 home opener

Scott Caldwell vs. D.C. United

FOXBOROUGH – The New England Revolution picked up their second point in as many games with a 0-0 draw against D.C. United at Gillette Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the Revs’ home opening match. Despite 18 total shots, the Revs were unable to find the back of the net. New England is now unbeaten in its first two matches for the first time since 2013.

Lee Nguyen proved dangerous throughout the match for the Revs; his best opportunity came in the 55th minute when he beat D.C. United goalkeeper Travis Worra from about ten yards, only to have the ball strike the crossbar. Kelyn Rowe also had an opportunity to break the deadlock in second half stoppage time, but shot just wide of the net, keeping the score level. For D.C., Luciano Acosta had a number of opportunities while on the pitch, but failed to put the ball in the net.

Bobby Shuttleworth registered his first shutout of the season, 30th of his career, as the backline rebounded after allowing three goals in New England’s season opening match in Houston on March 6.

The Revolution are now unbeaten in ten consecutive home openers (6-0-4). The scoreless draw is the fourth consecutive scoreless draw that New England has had in its home opener, playing to a scoreless draw with Sporting Kansas City (2013), Vancouver (2014) and Montreal (2015).
