TUCSON, Ariz. - The New England Revolution opened their 2016 preseason schedule with a 2-0 shutout victory this afternoon against the San Jose Earthquakes. Kelyn Rowe and Charlie Davies each recorded first half goals for New England. The Revs played a combination of rostered players and trialists to open the 2016 preseason slate, where draftees Jordan McCrary and Michael Gamble made their Revolution preseason debuts. Wednesday's game was the first of seven that the Revs have scheduled for the preseason.
Bobby Shuttleworth recorded the first save of the match, as San Jose's Chad Barrett had only the Revs' keeper to beat in the 12th minute. Following a New England set piece, Kelyn Rowe opened the scoring with the Revolution's first goal of the preseason in the 26th minute. The Revs nearly tallied again two minutes later, as Clarence Goodson's clearance of a Revs corner went just over the crossbar to force another corner.
The Earthquakes threatened to equalize in the 36th minute as a set piece delivery from Simon Dawkins was headed over the crossbar by Clarence Goodson. Just prior to the halftime whistle, Charlie Davies extended the Revolution lead in extra time, scoring on a loose ball following a corner.
Both teams made wholesale changes in the second half, with the exception of Shuttleworth, who made way for Brad Knighton in the 58th minute. Knighton kept the Revs' clean sheet intact via a one-handed diving save in the 61st minute, robbing San Jose's Shea Salinas of the Earthquakes' first goal of the contest. San Jose had another opportunity in the 76th minute as Tommy Thompson fired over the crossbar from inside the 18-yard box. The Earthquakes last threatening chance came in the 87th minute, as Patrick Hodon headed a ball into the arms of Brad Knighton, sealing the shutout victory for the Revolution.
New England will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 4 when the club takes on FC Dallas at Grande Sports World in Casa Grande, Arizona.
