FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution moved into first place in the Eastern Conference with a 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium. Diego Fagundez and Kelyn Rowe each scored for the second time in four days to extend the Revs’ winning streak to six games and their unbeaten streak to eight. With tonight’s win, the Revs now sit alone at the top of the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of D.C. United and New York in second place, and two points ahead of fourth place Columbus.

The Revolution took the lead just 62 seconds into the game with Fagundez scoring his sixth goal of the season and fourth in as many games. Lee Nguyen played a long pass to Juan Agudelo at the top of the New York area and the New England forward’s first touch found Fagundez behind the Red Bull’s backline. The Leominster, Mass. native powered his shot home past Luis Robles at the near post to give the Revs the early 1-0 lead.

The Red Bulls equalized four minutes later through Mike Grella, who volleyed past Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth from the edge of the box to tie the score. Kemar Lawrence was played in down the left flank and his low cross deflected off Revolution defender Jose Goncalves and off the crossbar with the rebound falling to Grella, who tied the score at 1-1.

Lee Nguyen nearly put the Revs back in front before halftime on a free kick from just outside of the New York area. Nguyen’s free kick successfully beat the New York wall and Robles, however, Dax McCarty retreated to the goal line and managed to make a desperate kick save to keep the score level at one heading into the half.

Rowe scored the game-winning goal in the 65^th minute after New York was unable to clear a Revolution corner kick. After a series of headers, the ball would fall to Scott Caldwell, who played a one-time pass for Rowe behind the New York defense, and the midfielder volleyed in for his sixth goal of the season, giving the Revs a 2-1 lead.

They would make that lead hold up, thanks in large to a Fagundez clearance off the line in the 74^th minute after Dax McCarty headed a Sacha Kljestan corner kick past Bobby Shuttleworth. With the win, the Revs are now in first place in the Eastern Conference for the first time since May 8 with just five games left in the regular season.

Kelyn Rowe – Scored the game-winner in the 65^th minute with his sixth strike of the season. The goal was his second in as many games, while it was his first game-winning goal since March 28, when he scored twice in a 2-1 win over San Jose.
