Revolution move in to first place in Eastern Conference with 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls

Kelyn Rowe vs. New York Red Bulls - Goal Celebration

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution moved into first place in the Eastern Conference with a 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium. Diego Fagundez and Kelyn Rowe each scored for the second time in four days to extend the Revs’ winning streak to six games and their unbeaten streak to eight. With tonight’s win, the Revs now sit alone at the top of the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of D.C. United and New York in second place, and two points ahead of fourth place Columbus.

The Revolution took the lead just 62 seconds into the game with Fagundez scoring his sixth goal of the season and fourth in as many games. Lee Nguyen played a long pass to Juan Agudelo at the top of the New York area and the New England forward’s first touch found Fagundez behind the Red Bull’s backline. The Leominster, Mass. native powered his shot home past Luis Robles at the near post to give the Revs the early 1-0 lead.

The Red Bulls equalized four minutes later through Mike Grella, who volleyed past Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth from the edge of the box to tie the score. Kemar Lawrence was played in down the left flank and his low cross deflected off Revolution defender Jose Goncalves and off the crossbar with the rebound falling to Grella, who tied the score at 1-1.

Lee Nguyen nearly put the Revs back in front before halftime on a free kick from just outside of the New York area. Nguyen’s free kick successfully beat the New York wall and Robles, however, Dax McCarty retreated to the goal line and managed to make a desperate kick save to keep the score level at one heading into the half.

Rowe scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute after New York was unable to clear a Revolution corner kick. After a series of headers, the ball would fall to Scott Caldwell, who played a one-time pass for Rowe behind the New York defense, and the midfielder volleyed in for his sixth goal of the season, giving the Revs a 2-1 lead.

They would make that lead hold up, thanks in large to a Fagundez clearance off the line in the 74th minute after Dax McCarty headed a Sacha Kljestan corner kick past Bobby Shuttleworth. With the win, the Revs are now in first place in the Eastern Conference for the first time since May 8 with just five games left in the regular season.

Additional Game Notes

  • With the win, the Revolution are now 13-9-7 for 46 points on the season. They are now alone in first place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of both New York and D.C. United and two points ahead of Columbus Crew SC, who fall back to fourth place.
  • This is the first time that the Revolution have been alone in first place since May 8 when they were one point ahead of D.C. United following a 2-2 draw on the road with Orlando City.
  • The Revs are now unbeaten in their last eight games, going 7-0-1 since July 18 when they beat New York City FC 1-0 at Gillette Stadium. The Revs’ eight-game unbeaten streak is the longest active streak in MLS and one games shy of equaling their nine-game unbeaten streak from earlier this year, which is the longest in the league this season.
  • New England has won each of its last six games for the longest winning streak in MLS this season.
  • This winning streak also matches the club record for longest winning streak and is tied for the second-longest in MLS since the start of the 2000 season, which was the first year in which ties were not settled by shootouts.
  • New England has taken 22 of a possible 24 points from its last eight games. The club had 24 points from its first 21 games.
  • This was the third and final meeting of the season between the Revolution and Red Bulls. New England finishes the season with a 2-1-0 record against New York, having also beaten them 2-1 at Gillette Stadium on May 2 and losing 4-1 at Red Bull Arena on July 11.
  • Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made five changes to the team that beat Toronto FC 3-1 on Sunday at BMO Field. London Woodberry, Kevin Alston, Daigo Kobayashi, Kelyn Rowe and Juan Agudelo all returned to the starting lineup in place of Jeremy Hall, Chris Tierney, Jermaine Jones, Teal Bunbury and Charlie Davies.
  • Of the five players who were replaced in the starting lineup, all but Jones started the game on the bench.
  • Jermaine Jones missed the game while serving a one-game suspension for yellow-card accumulation. He was shown his fifth yellow card of the season against Toronto FC on Sunday.
  • Jones is the second Revolution player to miss a game because of yellow-card accumulation, joining Andy Dorman, who replaced Jones in the 18-man squad.
  • Diego Fagundez gave the Revolution a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute with his sixth goal of the season and fourth in the last four games.
  • The Revs have now scored inside the opening five minutes of each of the last two games.
  • This was the eighth consecutive game in which the Revolution scored the game’s opening goal.
  • The six goals this season are the second-most of Fagundez’s MLS career. The only time Fagundez scored more than six goals in a season was in 2013 when he scored a career-best 13 goals.
  • Lee Nguyen was credited with an assist on the goal, giving him five in the last three games and 10 on the season.
  • Nguyen is the first Revolution player to record 10 or more assists in a season since Steve Ralston had 14 assists in 2007.
  • During New England’s current eight-game unbeaten streak, Nguyen has three goals and seven assists.
  • Juan Agudelo also picked up an assist on Fagundez’s goal. That was his third assist of the season and first since May 31 against the LA Galaxy.
  • There has been a goal scored inside the opening 10 minutes of all three games this season between the Revolution and Red Bulls.
  • New York equalized in the sixth minute through Mike Grella. He now has a goal or an assist in all three games between the Revolution and Red Bulls this season.
  • This was the second time this season that the Revs had gone in front 1-0 inside the opening two minutes only to concede the equalizer less than five minutes later.
  • Juan Agudelo was shown his fourth yellow card of the season in the 63rd minute. He is now one caution away from having to serve a one-game suspension for yellow-card accumulation.
  • Kelyn Rowe scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute, volleying home a cross from Scott Caldwell. That was his first game-winning goal since March 28 when he scored both goals in the Revs’ 2-1 win over San Jose.
  • That was Rowe’s sixth goal of the season and first in a game in which he started and his first at home since that win over San Jose.
  • Rowe has now scored in each of the last two games, having also scored the Revs’ third against Toronto FC on Sunday. This was the first time that Rowe had scored in consecutive games since Sept. 9 and Sept. 14 during the 2013 season.
  • Scott Caldwell was credited with his career-best fifth assist of the season, and his first since May 31.
  • London Woodberry was shown a yellow card in the 86th minute. That was his fifth yellow card of the season, meaning that he will be suspended for Saturday’s game against the Montreal Impact.
  • The Revs finish the regular season with a 1-2-0 record in midweek games in the league and 1-3-0 in all competitions. This was the club’s first and only home midweek game on the schedule this season.
  • The Revolution will be back in training at Gillette Stadium on Thursday and Friday morning before travelling to Montreal that afternoon ahead of Saturday night’s game against the Impact. That game ends a stretch of three games in seven days for the Revs.
