Revolution extend unbeaten streak to five games with 1-0 road win over Philadelphia

Scott Caldwell vs. Philadelphia Union

CHESTER, Pa. – The New England Revolution claimed a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night at PPL Park behind a second half goal from Diego Fagundez. With the win, the Revs extended their unbeaten streak to five games, going 4-0-1 since a July 18 win over NYC FC at Gillette Stadium while also snapping an eight-game road winless streak that dated back to a 2-1 win over Philadelphia on April 19.

Diego Fagundez and Lee Nguyen each had chances for New England inside the game’s opening 30 minutes while Tranquillo Barnetta and C.J. Sapong threatened Bobby Shuttleworth’s goal at the other end. Late in the opening half, Sebastien Le Toux had the best chance of the half for the Union, getting played in on the left before firing a shot that was parried away by Shuttleworth, keeping the game scoreless heading into the halftime break.

New England would go in front early in the second half when Diego Fagundez beat Union goalkeeper Andre Blake from 18 yards out. The attack started near midfield with Chris Tierney quickly taking a throw in to the feet of Charlie Davies, who flicked the ball into the path of Fagundez. Fagundez ran at Philadelphia defender Richie Marquez and then hit a right-footed shot from the edge of the area, catching Blake flat-footed and giving New England a 1-0 advantage. That was the third goal of the season for Fagundez and the 25th of his MLS career, making him the youngest player in league history to score 25 goals, doing so at 20 years and 196 days of age.

After the goal, the Union threw numbers forward but the Revolution defense held strong and did not allow a single shot on goal in the final 45 minutes. Juan Agudelo nearly doubled the Revolution lead late on after he was played cleanly through into the box, only for his close range shot to be saved by Blake. In the game’s final seconds, Philadelphia midfielder Cristian Maidana was sent off, forcing his side, who will visit Gillette Stadium on Sept. 26, to finish the game with 10 men.

Additional Game Notes

  • With the win, the Revolution are now 10-9-7 for 37 points on the season. They remain tied with Toronto FC for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Both teams are two points behind the New York Red Bulls, who host D.C. United on Sunday night, and nine points ahead of the three teams that are tied for sixth place.
  • The Revs are now unbeaten in their last five games, going 4-0-1 since July 18 when they beat New York City FC 1-0 at Gillette Stadium. The Revs’ five-game unbeaten streak is the longest active streak in MLS and four games shy of their nine-game unbeaten streak from earlier this year, which is the longest in the league this season.
  • New England has taken 13 of a possible 15 points from their last five games.
  • After failing to win any of their first six games on the road all-time against Philadelphia, the Revs have now won each of their last three, including two this season.
  • New England has now won 10 games for the third straight season.
  • The Revs finished the month of August with a perfect 3-0-0 record. This was the first time that the club played an entire month without tying or losing any games since going 2-0-0 in October 2006.
  • This was the 50th win of Jay Heaps’ coaching career, making him the 25th coach in MLS history to reach 50 wins. Since taking charge of the team in November 2011, the Revs are 50-50-28.
  • This is the first time that the Revolution have had more wins than losses on the season since they were 6-5-6 on June 21 following a road loss to D.C. United.
  • This was the Revs’ first road win since April 19 when they beat the Union 2-1 at PPL Park.
  • Revolution head coach Jay Heaps used the same starting XI as he used in the 2-0 win over Houston in the Revs’ last game on Aug. 15. This was the first time all season that the Revs have used the same starting lineup in consecutive games.
  • The last time the Revs used the same starting lineup in consecutive regular season games was the fourth and fifth games of the 2014 season on March 29 and April 5 of that season.
  • The only change to the 18-man squad was Steve Neumann returning to the bench in place of Andy Dorman.
  • Darrius Barnes was the only Revolution player to miss the game because of injury, missing his 20th straight game while recovering from left knee surgery.
  • New England goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth made two saves for his seventh clean sheet of the season and second in as many games. He is now two shutouts away from tying his single season career-high and three from tying the single season club record.
  • This was the first time that the Revolution have kept a clean sheet in consecutive games since April 4 and April 11 in the fifth and sixth games of the year.
  • Diego Fagundez scored the game’s only goal in the 51st minute. That was his third goal of the season and first since June 13, ending a run of nine straight games without a goal.
  • That was the first of Fagundez’s three goals to come away from Gillette Stadium and his first road goal since he scored at PPL Park in May 2014.
  • For his career, Fagundez now has four goals and four assists in nine regular-season games against the Union.
  • That goal was the 25th of his MLS career, making him the youngest player in MLS history to scored 25 regular-season goals. At 20 years and 196 days, Fagundez breaks the record of Eddie Gaven, who was 20 years and 353 days old when he scored his 25th as a member of Columbus Crew SC.
  • Charlie Davies was credited with the lone assist on the goal. That was his second of the season and first since setting up a Scott Caldwell goal at Sporting Kansas City on May 20.
  • The Revs have now scored first in all five games of their current five-game unbeaten streak.
  • Diego Fagundez and Lee Nguyen each finished the game with two shots on goal, equal to the Union’s total for the match.
  • Jermaine Jones was shown a 58th minute yellow card, his fourth of the season. He is now one caution away from a mandatory one-game suspension.
  • For the second straight game, Jose Goncalves was not shown a yellow card meaning that if he is not booked in his next game, he will have one caution expunged from his record and he will no longer be in danger of being suspended for a game.
  • Scott Caldwell played the full 90 minutes and has now set a new career-high for minutes played in a season with 2,249. His previous high came in his rookie season of 2013 when he played 2,174 minutes. He remains the only Revolution player to appear in every game that the club has played this season in all competitions.
  • Juan Agudelo and Bobby Shuttleworth each played their 98th career regular-season game. All 98 of Shuttleworth’s appearances have come as a member of the Revolution, leaving him two games shy of becoming the second goalkeeper in Revolution history to appear in 100 games for the club.
  • Lee Nguyen saw his streak of five consecutive games with a goal or an assist come to an end. That streak was tied for the second longest in MLS this season and tied for the longest in his MLS career.
  • Chris Tierney started his 163rd game for the club, leaving him tied with Taylor Twellman for the fifth most in club history.
