Postgame Quotes: Revolution 2, San Jose Earthquakes 1

Juan Agudelo vs. San Jose Earthquakes

New England Revolution head coach Jay Heaps

On the first goal of the season:
“I think it was good, we got a fortunate deflection. You take any way you can for the first (goal). We were excited by our first half and the way out for the first half and even with the start of the second but unfortunately it became a real game and it was a good job to hold on but it probably shouldn’t been so close, but it was.”

On the play of midfielder Kelyn Rowe:
“I thought Kelyn (Rowe) was excellent. Not just scoring the goals but also the way he pressured, the way he played, his connection with Charlie (Davies) up top, but also the midfielders. So, I thought Kelyn tonight was excellent all away around.”

On the team’s offensive efforts through the first four games:
“I don’t think it was the cross or guys not being there. It was as I said last week, “inches and not feet” and we just didn’t finish them. Tonight, we had more chances. I think we could have easily scored more goals but we didn’t, so we got to continue to work at that final, the actual shot. The actual putting it in the back of the net. We created turnovers (in the first three games) but we didn’t do anything with the turnovers, it was either a backwards ball or somewhere that wasn’t dangerous, now we want to win the ball and tonight you saw when we won it and looked forward, there was chances and opportunities, and that what we are trying to do, especially at home.”

On the relationship between Charlie Davies and Juan Agudelo:
“Charlie (Davies) adds a really strong presence up there, to get in behind. I think he is so fast and he has a lot of pace. He got in behind a lot tonight, and what that does it makes one center back worry about him and the other think about him, so now they are dropping off and they are giving a little bit more depth and cover, that it opens up enough space for us. I think Juan’s (Agudelo) strengths are holding off defenders and checking too. I think when you put him on the wing, he is a little bit more comfortable out there as well, with his back to goal against a smaller defender maybe as well. I think both (Davies and Agudelo) strengths work but at the same time but I think it’s going to be a matchup of what we feel from the opposing team as to when we put those two on the field together.”

On midfielders Daigo Kobayashi and Scott Caldwell:
“I think Daigo (Kobayashi) has been excellent the last three games, even in New York, last week against (Montreal), and again tonight. I’m really happy with the position he has taken up because he’s kind of the in-between guy. Scotty (Caldwell) has a little bit more responsibility defensively and Daigo is the one that has to cut off passing lanes and help with the pressure and he did that well tonight. I also like the relationship him and Scotty have, they’re communicating, they’re taking up passing lines and the two of them are not the most athletic but with all the balls they won, that both are the biggest players in the field.”

On the play of fullbacks Chris Tierney and Darrius Barnes:
“I think both players in different ways impact the game. Chris is someone that always impacts with his crosses and his ability to get in the attack and I thought Darrius tonight, we had a decision tonight to make this week, it wasn’t easy, with that decision tonight, bringing Jose (Goncalves) back in and moving Darrius out to the wingback position. I thought Darrius had an excellent week of training, and an excellent game last week, so it was hard to take him off. I thought again tonight he proves why you put him in there. He’s fighting for everything, he’s got some a real good experience behind him now, every challenge he gets into now you just feel like he’s going to come out with the ball.”

New England Revolution defender Darrius Barnes

On the team’s defensive performance:
“I thought we did a pretty good, pretty decent job defensively. We were able to keep them at bay and keep their key players from having dangerous opportunities, and as a group we were able to get behind the ball and keep them at bay. I think we did a great job and to get the first three points of the season is critical.”

On playing center back last weekend and right back today:
“It’s something I’m comfortable with. I’ve been in the center and I’ve been on the right and I just want to be on the field at all times so to [be able to] help the team [and] be able to go out there and contribute and help the team succeed on the field I think [contributes to] a great performance by the whole entire squad.”

On the assist for Kelyn Rowe’s second goal:
“It was something we’ve worked on, just getting across the box. Set pieces are something that we want to get better at and I just took it upon myself to try to get in the mix and get something on frame. I asked Kelyn [Rowe] if it was going in, he said no, so I’ll give it to him. To get that goal [and] get that assist on the goal was great and Kelyn getting two goals was even better.”

On the team’s confidence after getting their first goal of the season:
“We knew it was coming; we’ve been creating chances all season. Unfortunately the first three games of the season we weren’t able to get one but we knew the time was coming, we were right there knocking at the door, and getting that first goal I feel like it helps our confidence and gets the ball rolling a little bit and I think you’re going to see a lot more of the same.”

On the physicality of the game:
“We knew a Dom Kinnear team was going to be physical. That’s his identity and we were expecting a physical game and they came with it and we were able to match it in the first half and I thought after we managed to put the ball down and play it opened up a bit. I thought the first half we completely dominated the game, we were creating the bulk of the chances. Second half, they came out with a tactical switch, and that took us a bit to adjust to that, but once we were able to adjust we were able to get back behind the ball and keep them at bay.”

New England Revolution midfielder Kelyn Rowe

On scoring the team’s first goal of the season:
“I knew it was going to be on target and that was my goal. You know I’m on top of the 18 on the right side, put that ball on target. You got Charlie (Davies), you got Juan (Agudelo), you got Lee (Nguyen), and other guys just really pouncing on the ball so it’s one of those where if it goes in it goes in, but if not we’re going to get a good rebound on it, and it could have a chance there.”

On his motivation to get the first goal:
“I think it’s a little bit of both. Obviously everyone wants to get the first goal and once we did I think we created so many chances after that. You’ve got guys like Chris (Tierney) putting in balls that were absolutely dangerous, Lee (Nguyen) really creating space for everyone else and we were pressing really and high winning balls in their half and that just put us in the counter where we were really good.”

On taking shots from distance:
“You want to get shots on target because if you do, something’s going to happen. Whether it be a deflection goal, whether it be like a rebound, and again we have guys like Charlie (Davies) who likes to poach and finds those gaps, you have guys like Juan (Agudelo) who’s always in there fighting, so if you want to put anything on target it’s going to happen.”

On what the first goal means for the team:
“I think it picks it up a little bit, it’s not easy going three games without a goal and only having one point. I think especially at home it’s good to find those goals, it’s good to play well, and create these chances but I think going forward the confidence it going to be higher and I think you’ll find goals from other guys as well.”

San Jose Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear

On using all of his subs early:
“Two were my decision and one was actually played upon us by the injury.”

On whether he believed it was a physically rough game:
“No, I don’t think so. I think there weren’t a lot of tackles being played. I didn’t think it was a rough game at all.”

On the ball bouncing around:
“Yeah, it happens with turf and then cold weather and the snow. These conditions are a little bit rare but give them credit. They came out ready, we came out a little bit sleepy and that’s why we were down 2-0 at halftime. We fought hard to get back into the game and then obviously the chance at the end would have been great for us but unfortunately we couldn’t capitalize on it.”

On the adjustments made at halftime:
“Nothing (tactically), just the attitude was different. Just better, more aggressive.”

On what kept the San Jose offense from having success early on:
“We weren’t playing through their pressure. The pressure wasn’t fantastic. We were making bad decisions and giving the ball away in bad spots and the first goal was a testament to that. We just couldn’t get going. They started out, like I said give them credit, they came out (with) good energy. We were just a little bit passive in our movement off the ball and therefore we weren’t giving ourselves a ton of help. The very end of the first half we were a little bit better two goals down. Then obviously the second half you have to play better because if you don’t then you’re in big trouble. I thought the guys showed a good response. Like I said, at the very end there it would have been nice to be 2-2, but we didn’t score that last chance there.”

San Jose Earthquakes forward Adam Jahn

On the opportunities San Jose was able to create in the second half:
“If we scored one more goal, we’d have tied. We were knocking on the door. Sometimes it doesn’t bounce our way but we put the ball in the box, and that’s all we can do. We just needed to get better at our finishing.”

On the adjustments the team made during halftime:
“We were down 2-0. We had really nothing to lose; just make a statement, get back in the game. We got one back with Clarence (Goodson) getting the PK, and I thought we were going to get a second one but that’s the way it goes.”

On how the penalty kick changed the momentum of the game:
“It was huge for us. I think we deserved it. We were—that’s what happens when you put the ball in the box. Once you get one, you get the momentum going and look for the second one.”

On positive takeaways despite the result:
“Yeah, you can always take something out of the game. I think we put them on their heels at home in the second half and were unlucky to get a tie.”

San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski

On changing the system at halftime to get more possession
“Yeah, our offensive strategy was (to) wake up. I think that we – it’s no excuse – we let, I think the elements (hinder us), and we didn’t come ready. I think that we dug ourselves in a hole and we knew at halftime we had to wake up and just play, play how we can. I think we showed glimpses of it in the second half, still better, not great enough or not good enough, but a little better.”

On if the snow contributed to San Jose’s slow start
“No it was actually, the field actually played pretty well. It’s a little cold, but no, it was fine. And just our mentality was off.”

On changing roles with Adam Jahn brought on at halftime
“Yeah, I dropped a little in the midfield. Kind of side by side with Matias (Perez Garcia). I got to cover a little bit more ground, but I was able to kind of make some runs out of midfield. I think that kind of helped us settle, slow things down and connect some passes. I thought he did a great job of battling and posting up and being a target forward. And that helped us keep the ball a bit.”
