FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution recorded their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 at Gillette Stadium. Kelyn Rowe scored both goals for the Revs, who entered the game without a goal in any of their first three games of the year.

Rowe scored each of his goals in the opening 45 minutes, sending the Revs into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead. He opened the scoring in the 21st minute, breaking a string of 291 minutes to open the season without a goal. Daigo Kobayashi intercepted a Shaun Francis pass and played the ball forward to Lee Nguyen on the right wing. Nguyen then found Rowe on the edge of the area and his right-footed shot deflected off Francis and past San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Revs.

Rowe nearly doubled the New England lead in the 35th minute, only for Bingham to palm the ball away just before it crossed the line. However, just two minutes later, Rowe would get his second, bundling the ball home from close range after Darrius Barnes had headed down a Chris Tierney free kick, making the score 2-0.

San Jose pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute when Scott Caldwell was called for a foul on Clarence Goodson at the top of the New England penalty area, and forward Chris Wondolowski converted the resulting penalty kick, cutting the Revs’ lead to 2-1.

The score would stay that way thanks to a pair of late saves by Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. Shuttleworth was called upon in the 83rd minute to tip a Victor Bernardez header over the bar and then again in second half stoppage time when he punched away a drive from Wondolowski, sealing the full three points for the Revs as they held on for the 2-1 win.

Revolution Santander Man of the Match

KELYN ROWE – Scored a pair of first-half goals and consistently threatened the San Jose defense to lead the Revs to their first win of the season. This was Rowe’s first multi-goal game since August 2013 and he set career-highs with seven shots and five shots on goal.

• With the win, the Revolution are now 1-2-1 for four points on the season.
• This was the second consecutive season in which the Revs claimed their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over San Jose in the fourth game of the year.
• Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made two changes to the squad that drew 0-0 with Montreal last weekend with Jose Goncalves returning to the starting lineup and Charlie Davies getting his first start of the year. They replaced Jeremy Hall and Diego Fagundez, each of whom began the game on the bench.
• Goncalves returned to the lineup after serving a one-game suspension last weekend and once again wore the captain’s armband.
• The Revs were without Kevin Alston, Teal Bunbury and Jermaine Jones, who all missed the game with injuries.
• The match was played in continual blowing snow, forcing the teams to use special high-visibility balls. This was the first time that the Revs had ever used the balls for a home regular-season game.
• New England took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Kelyn Rowe hit a shot that was deflected past San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham. That was the Revs’ first goal of the season.
