FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution recorded their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 at Gillette Stadium. Kelyn Rowe scored both goals for the Revs, who entered the game without a goal in any of their first three games of the year.

Rowe scored each of his goals in the opening 45 minutes, sending the Revs into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead. He opened the scoring in the 21st minute, breaking a string of 291 minutes to open the season without a goal. Daigo Kobayashi intercepted a Shaun Francis pass and played the ball forward to Lee Nguyen on the right wing. Nguyen then found Rowe on the edge of the area and his right-footed shot deflected off Francis and past San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Revs.

Rowe nearly doubled the New England lead in the 35th minute, only for Bingham to palm the ball away just before it crossed the line. However, just two minutes later, Rowe would get his second, bundling the ball home from close range after Darrius Barnes had headed down a Chris Tierney free kick, making the score 2-0.

San Jose pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute when Scott Caldwell was called for a foul on Clarence Goodson at the top of the New England penalty area, and forward Chris Wondolowski converted the resulting penalty kick, cutting the Revs’ lead to 2-1.

The score would stay that way thanks to a pair of late saves by Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. Shuttleworth was called upon in the 83rd minute to tip a Victor Bernardez header over the bar and then again in second half stoppage time when he punched away a drive from Wondolowski, sealing the full three points for the Revs as they held on for the 2-1 win.

Additional Game Notes

  • With the win, the Revolution are now 1-2-1 for four points on the season.
  • This was the second consecutive season in which the Revs claimed their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over San Jose in the fourth game of the year.
  • Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made two changes to the squad that drew 0-0 with Montreal last weekend with Jose Goncalves returning to the starting lineup and Charlie Davies getting his first start of the year. They replaced Jeremy Hall and Diego Fagundez, each of whom began the game on the bench.
  • Goncalves returned to the lineup after serving a one-game suspension last weekend and once again wore the captain’s armband.
  • The Revs were without Kevin Alston, Teal Bunbury and Jermaine Jones, who all missed the game with injuries.
  • The match was played in continual blowing snow, forcing the teams to use special high-visibility balls. This was the first time that the Revs had ever used the balls for a home regular-season game.
  • New England took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Kelyn Rowe hit a shot that was deflected past San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham. That was the Revs’ first goal of the season.
  • The goal snapped a streak of 291 minutes without a goal to open the season, which was the second longest stretch to open a season without a goal in club history. Last year, the Revs went 305 minutes without a goal to open the season.
  • Dating back to the end of the 2014 regular season, the Revs had gone 346 minutes without a goal, which was the fifth longest scoreless streak in club history.
  • Lee Nguyen and Daigo Kobayashi were each credited with assists on the goal.
  • That was Kobayashi’s fifth assist as a member of the Revolution. The club is 5-0-0 when he records an assist in a regular-season game.
  • For Nguyen, it was the 15th regular-season assist of his career. He is the sixth player in Revolution history with 25 or more goals and 15 or more assists.
  • Rowe doubled the New England lead in the 37th minute with his second goal of the game. This was the second multi-goal game of his MLS career and first since August 25, 2013 against Philadelphia.
  • This was the first time that Rowe had scored twice in the same half and he was the first Revolution player to do so since Lee Nguyen did in a 2-1 win over Houston in October 2014. Dominic Kinnear, who was the head coach of the Dynamo for that game, is now the head coach of the Earthquakes.
  • Chris Tierney and Darrius Barnes were each credited with assists on Rowe’s second goal. That was the first assist of the season for each man and their first career assist against the Earthquakes.
  • This was Rowe’s first game-winning goal since his rookie season in 2012 and the second of his MLS career.
Both Barnes and Tierney had two game-winning assists in 2014 and this was their first of 2015.
  • San Jose pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute when Chris Wondolowski scored from the penalty spot. The penalty came about as result of a foul by Scott Caldwell on Clarence Goodson at the top of the penalty area.
  • That was the second penalty conceded by the Revs in four games this season.
  • New England outshot the Earthquakes 20-11, including 14-3 in the first half.
  • The Revs finished the game with eight shots on goal. They entered the game with six shots on goal through the first three games of the season.

  • Shuttleworth collected the 30th win of his MLS career in the game. He is the second goalkeeper in Revolution history to record 30 wins for the club and the 37th goalkeeper in MLS history to do so.
  • For the first time this season, no Revs were booked in the game.
  • Sean Okoli made his home debut in the game for New England, coming on for Charlie Davies in the 83rd minute.
